Two More in the Win Column for Dixie State

Grimes great in opener; offense shows in both games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ST. GEORGE, UTAH – Dixie State College's baseball team extended their current win streak to five with a Monday doubleheader sweep over the University of Hawaii-Hilo. Preston Grimes (Taylorsville, UT/Taylorsville) threw six solid innings in the 4-1 opener while the offense sparked the charge late in a 7-5 nightcap victory.

The Red Storm (16-9, 10-6 PWC) got solid games offensively from 3B Tony Nelson (St. George. UT/Dixie) (4-8, 2RBI), CF Brett Adams (Sandy, UT/Alta) (4-7, R, 3RBI) and C/DH Drew Oldfield (Aurora, CO/Rangeview) (3-4, 3R, 3RBI).

Grimes kept the Vulcans (5-15, 1-11 PWC) off balance allowing just one run on six hits while striking out four. He evened his season record to 3-3. Todd Morlock (Magna, UT /Taylorsville) tossed a perfect inning for his sixth save.

In the nightcap, Morlock closed out the game earning a win (1-0) after 4.2 innings from freshman Bryce Anderson (Cedar City, UT/Cedar HS). UH Hilo, once down by three runs, tied the game with a two out rally in the fifth before the Storm responded.

Nelson, who committed a defensive error in the top of the inning, earned redemption with an RBI single plating Oldfield.

The Storm plated two more insurance runs in the sixth. Oldfield lifted an RBI sacrifice fly and Adams doubled in Colton Yack (South Jordan, UT/Bingham) to close the scoring.

Dixie State and UH Hilo close out their five-game series with a single, non-conference game – first pitch at 1:00pm.
