Dixie State Baseball Edges Hawaii Pacific

Storm takes one-run non-conference contest

Box Score ST. GEORGE, UTAH – In a non-conference game Tuesday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field, the Dixie State baseball team had to once again endure a late Hawaii Pacific University charge. Leading by six runs at one point, the Storm saw their lead shrink and almost evaporate before holding off the Sea Warriors 6-5 on a sunny afternoon in Southern Utah.

Freshman starter Bryce Anderson (Cedar City, UT/Cedar HS) guided Dixie State (12-9, 6-6 PWC) through 7.1 solid innings. He allowed two earned on 11 hits and struck out two for the victory (1-0). Todd Morlock (Magna, UT /Taylorsville) tallied his fifth save stranding HPU's potential tying run on second base in the ninth.

Dixie State opened the scoring in the fourth with some help via walks and errors. Judd Jensen (Taylorsville, UT/Taylorsville) and Colton Yack (South Jordan, UT/Bingham) walked while Quinn Boyer (Ogden, UT/Bonneville HS) reached on a fielding error at second base. Drew Oldfield (Aurora, CO/Rangeview) cleared the bases with a three-run triple to right field. Brett Adams (Sandy, UT/Alta) capped the scoring with a liner to left plating Oldfield.

Two more runs crossed home in the seventh and proved to be essential insurance. Yack singled in Aaron Friend (Las Vegas. NV/Centennial HS) who doubled to lead off the frame. Adams would advance Yack on a sacrifice fly for Dixie State's sixth run.

Hawaii Pacific cut the cushion to one before the tying run was cut down at home on a throw from Boyer in left field.

Oldfield had two hits and 3RBI leading the Storm offense. Jensen added two safeties and Yack scored twice.

Dixie State opens a five-game series against the University of Hawaii-Hilo on Sunday, March 21. First pitch of a scheduled doubleheader is at 3:00pm.

Live radio coverage from Bruce Hurst Field begins at 2:50pm with the “Voice of the Red Storm” John Potter on Classical 91.3 FM and Network1Sports.com.
