DSC Takes Series with MSU Billings

DH split on Monday; Storm takes three of four

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ST. GEORGE, UTAH – Dixie State College split a pair of games Monday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field against Montana State University-Billings in non-conference play. The Yellowjackets took the opener 2-1 with the Storm bouncing back for a 5-1 triumph later in the afternoon.

DSC (6-6, 1-3 PacWest) was held to one run and one hit by MSUB starter Archie Smith in game one. Smith worked out of a bases loaded, one out jam in the first inning and proceeded to retire 11 straight before an error landed a baserunner in the fifth. Dixie State got its lone tally an inning later when Ammon Sitting scored from third on a Smith balk.

Preston Grimes (Taylorsville, UT/Taylorsville) (L, 1-3) tossed 5.2 innings allowing five hits and striking out five. His fourth inning offering to Jaret Chatwood resulted in a two-run blast, the game-winning hit. Brett Adams (Sandy, UT/Alta) had DSC's only safety - a double down the left field line in the sixth inning.

In the series finale, southpaw Alex Hesterly (Alpine, UT/Lone Peak) scattered one run on six hits to earn his first win.

The DSC offense tallied four runs in the first inning. Aaron Friend (Las Vegas. NV/Centennial HS) tripled to right and scored on a Zitting double. Adams bunted for a single and a throwing error from third base allowed Zitting to score. Chas Brunke (Glendale, AZ/Cactus) singled home Adams for a 3-1 lead. Quinn Boyer (Ogden, UT/Bonneville HS) closed the output with an RBI single to left plating Brunke.

Adams added insurance with a run-scoring double in the fourth.

The Red Storm will hit the road for Pac West play this weekend in San Francisco against the Academy of Art University. The four-game series begins Friday at 1:00pm MT.
