ST. GEORGE, UT – The Dixie State College Red Storm began the 2010 baseball season with a pair of wins over seventh-ranked Mesa State College on Friday afternoon. DSC knocked out 13 team hits in the 7-2 opener and scored five runs in the sixth inning of the nightcap to outlast the Mavs 11-10.

Dixie State (2-0) senior Preston Grimes (Taylorsville, UT/Taylorsville) battled through five innings allowing two earned runs on six hits to earn the game one victory. 3B Tony Nelson (St. George. UT/Dixie) went 2-for-4 including a solo home run (1) and C Drew Oldfield (Aurora, CO/Rangeview) blasted a two-run bomb (1) for the Storm.

Art Flores and Colton Vaughn had two hits apiece for Mesa St in game one. The Mavs could not capitalize on their opportunities, stranding 10 runners. Chris Shea (L, 0-1) was knocked around for four runs and eight hits in three innings.

In the nightcap, Mesa State scored five runs in the first three innings. Jeff Popick went to the opposite field on a first inning homer, Kevin Becker laced a two-run single in the second and a wild pitch-interference play led to two more runs in the third.

The Red Storm, down 5-1 in the home third, drew three walks off Mavs' starter Garrett Carpenter before Oldfield lifted a grand slam over the wall in left to tie the game.

After a scoreless fourth, the teams traded runs until Mesa State led 8-6 entering the DSC sixth. Dylan Evans entered the game and found immediate trouble. Judd Jensen (Taylorsville, UT/Taylorsville)'s lead-off walk was followed by singles from Ammon Zitting (Pleasant Grove. UT/Lone Peak) and Colton Yack (South Jordan, UT/Bingham). Aaron Friend (Las Vegas. NV/Centennial HS) drew another walk to end Evans' (0-1) appearance. Former DSC player, Jack Amidei was called to mound and offered an RBI-single to Nelson tying the game at 8-8. Amidei then walked Brett Adams (Sandy, UT/Alta) with the bases loaded to push ahead the eventual game winner. Two subsequent insurance runs proved essential for a DSC win.

Todd Morlock (Magna, UT /Taylorsville) surrendered two runs in the visitor's seventh on an RBI groundout and a wild pitch before getting pinch hitter Pete Arakawa to ground out with two down. Morlock salvaged the save and handed Payton Rentmeister (Riverton, UT/Riverton) (W, 1-0) the victory in relief.

The two teams meet for another doubleheader Saturday morning beginning at 11:00am from Bruce Hurst Field.
