Red Storm Sting Jackets Twice

Dixie State back to .500 mark with convincing DH sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ST. GEORGE, UTAH – Despite losing five of their last six games, Dixie State College head coach Mike Littlewood felt this year's Red Storm baseball team is one of the better squads he has managed. Sunday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field, the club exercised their might emphatically beating Montana State University – Billings in doubleheader play 8-0 and 15-3.

The Red Storm (5-5, 1-3 Pac West) received solid pitching, good hitting and timely breaks to keep the visiting Yellowjackets winless on the season (0-6).

After two scoreless innings in game one, DSC rattled off five runs in the third with the benefit on only one hit. MSUB starter Jacob Vulk (L, 0-1) began facing six batter and alternated between hitting them with a pitch or walking them – leading to the Storm's first three runs. Judd Jensen (Taylorsville, UT/Taylorsville) singled to bring home the fourth tally while the final run plated on a Tony Nelson (St. George. UT/Dixie) groundball out.

Single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth capped off the series opening win. Justin Prodan (Rohnert Park, CA/Rancho Cotate)  allowed one earned run on eight hits while fanning five over 5.2 innings to earn his first victory (1-2). Payton Rentmeister (Riverton, UT/Riverton) struck out a pair closing out the final four outs.

Jensen and Brett Adams (Sandy, UT/Alta) each had two hits in game one. Drew Oldfield (Aurora, CO/Rangeview) had two RBI.

In game two, the Yellowjackets struck first, but Dixie State responded back with another five-run frame. Nelson doubled home two off the left field wall. Jensen provided the highlight with a towering two-run blast to left, his first of the year.

The Storm would blow the game open with a nine-run fourth. Jensen plated two more runs with a single. Freshman Colton Yack (South Jordan, UT/Bingham) cashed in two RBI with a gap double to right center. Rhett Welsh (Arvada, CO/Standley Lake) and Adams each had run-scoring singles while Aaron Friend (Las Vegas. NV/Centennial HS)'s sac fly got home another.

An insurance run came in the sixth when Quinn Boyer (Ogden, UT/Bonneville HS) singled to left bringing in Welsh.

The offense was plenty for a pair of freshman hurlers. Troy Hunter (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial) nabbed his first college win tossing four innings of five-hit baseball surrendering one unearned run. Bryce Anderson (Cedar City, UT/Cedar HS) scattered two runs in the final three innings to earn his first save.

Jensen finished the day going 5-for-9 with five runs batted in.

Dixie State and MSU Billings take to the field Monday afternoon for another doubleheader scheduled to start at 12 Noon.
