Seasiders Down Dixie State 91-74 in Laie

DSC never recovers from 23-point halftime deficit

LAIE, HI –
The Dixie State College men's basketball could not dig themselves out of a volcanic-sized halftime hole losing to BYU-Hawaii 91-74 in Pacific West Conference play on Thursday night.
 
Dixie State (15-5, 9-2 Pac West) allowed the host Seasiders to shoot 20-of-35 from the field in the first half including 6-of-12 from beyond the three-point arc. The Red Storm was haunted by 15 first-half turnover although they shot 44-percent in the half. BYUH built a 55-32 advantage after 20 minutes.
 
The Seasiders pushed the advantage to 26 points twice in the second half before allowing Dixie State to close within the final margin of 17 late. The Storm outscored BYUH 42-36 in the second half, but fell short of another Chaminade-like comeback.
 
Tom Whitehead (St. George, UT/Dixie) made four of nine shots from the floor and sank all eight free throws attempts en route to a DSC-high 16 points. Whitehead also cleaned up the boards ripping down eight rebounds. Donovan Plunkett (Oroville, CA/Las Plumas) netted 13 points with three triples. Jeremiah Barnes (Compton, CA/Los Altos) needed 14 shots to score 12 points while Zach Robbins (Upland, CA/Upland) was a perfect 5-of-5 for 10 points.
 
BYU-Hawaii had defending Division-II Player of the Year Lucas Alves scored 19 points pacing six Seasiders in double figures.           
 
BYUH outshot the Storm 54.8-percent to 48.2-percent for the game. DSC bested the boards by a 39-26 tally.
 
The Hawaiian road trip concludes Saturday afternoon with the season's first matchup with current conference leader, the Seas Warriors of Hawaii Pacific University. Tip time from the Blaisdell Center is scheduled for 3:00pm HT (6:00pm MT).
