MBB: West Region Spotlight Game with BYU Hawaii

Pac West Bests Battle in West Region Spotlight

 

UP NEXT: Dixie State College of Utah continue their four-game Hawaiian road trip against the BYU-Hawaii Seasiders on Thursday, February 18, 2010 at 7:30pm HST (10:30 MST) at the Cannon Events Center.

 

THE RECORDS: DSC enters the game with a 15-4 record after a monumental comeback win at Chaminade 83-72 on Tuesday night. Dixie State is 7-4 this season on the road including a 5-1 road record in Pac West play. BYU-Hawaii has won __ in a row and sports a 14-5 overall record. The Seasiders sit third in the Pac West at 8-2.

 

ALL-TIME SERIES: BYU-Hawaii holds a 5-2 advantage in the seven-game series. DSC won the first battle this year 86-78 in the Burns Arena. BYU-H took both games last year including a 100-79 blowout in Laie on Feb. 2, 2009.

 

BROADCAST INFORMATION: RADIO - Dixie State College basketball games, both home and away, can be heard live on the Red Storm Basketball Radio Network - Classical 91.3 FM and Network1Sports.com online with the voice of the Red Storm, John Potter.

TV – BYU Television will broadcast the game live from on Thursday beginning at 10:30pm MT.

 

RED STORM WATCH: Tom Whitehead (St. George, UT/Dixie) leads the team in scoring average at a 16.4 point per game clip. Donovan Plunkett (Oroville, CA/Las Plumas) (13.4) and Andy Palmer (St. George. UT/Pine View) (11.0) also average double figures. Freshman Zach Robbins (Upland, CA/Upland) paces the club pulling down 6.5 rebounds a game with Palmer (5.4) and Whitehead (5.2) following. DSC averages 74.6 points a game shooting 47.6% FG while allowing 67.4 points to opponents.

·         REGION RANKS – Dixie State remained at #6 in the West Region in the poll announced by the NCAA on Wednesday.. BYU-Hawaii is dropped a spot to #8. Hawaii Pacific dropped out of the Top 10 while CSU Dominguez Hills, who DSC has defeated twice this year, debuted at #10. Seattle Pacific and Western Washington top the region.

·         CAREER SCORING RANKS - #4 Tom Whitehead (St. George, UT/Dixie) (527; 19 points behind #3 Troy Randall), #6 Andy Palmer (St. George. UT/Pine View) (446; 38 points behind #5 Kasey Winters), #9 Kevin Lindquist (Gilbert. AZ/Lone Peak) (285; 1 point behind #8 Bowie Jeffs (Castle Dale. UT/Emery)), #10 Nick Howard (Sandy. UT/Jordan) (284; 1 points behind Lindquist)

·         MILESTONE – Tom Whitehead (St. George, UT/Dixie) moved past 500 career points at Dixie State with a three-pointer in the second half of DSC's win at UH Hilo on February 14.

·         MILESTONE - Andy Palmer (St. George. UT/Pine View) eclipsed 200 career rebounds with his first board Saturday night against GCU. Palmer is #5 in DSC D-II rebounding with 206.

·         WITHIN REACH – Andy Palmer (St. George. UT/Pine View) needs 32 rebounds to reach 250 career, 54 points for 500 career, 28 field goals for 200 career; Tom Whitehead (St. George, UT/Dixie) needs 73 points for 600 career, 13 rebounds for 200 career, 37 assists for 100 career, 29 three-pointers for 100 career, 3 blocked shots for 50 career; Nick Howard (Sandy. SCOUTING BYU-HAWAII: The Seasiders are performing like everyone expected them to be when they were chosen as the Division-II preseason number-one team in the nation. Aiding the club has been the better play of defending D-II All-American/Player of the Year Lucas Alves and the presence of the returning Jet Chang – last season's Pac West Freshman of the Year. Alves has shaken off the rust after tearing his ACl last summer. Chang broke his arm on December 11, but returned two games ago to post 20 points vs. Dominican. The Seasiders boast a six game win streak including their last five at home. BYUH is coached by Ken Wagner in his 20th year in Laie. He has a 383-178 career coaching record.
