ANCHORAGE, AK-December 11, 2010-The Dixie State College women's basketball team received its first blemish of the season in a 68-53 loss to #12 University of Alaska Anchorage on Saturday night in the final game of the AT&T Hoops Classic.
The Red Storm (8-1) was on the wrong side of a game starting 16-2 run that propelled the Seawolves (8-2) to victory. UAA never trailed in the game and led by as many as 24 points with just few minutes remaining before halftime.
Dixie State committed 18 of its 25 turnovers in the first half and then allowed the Seawolves to convert those into 17 first half points. The full court pressure of UAA caused havoc in many ways. The Red Storm only attempted 21 shots in the first half to UAA's 38 and the Seawolves had a 38-23 lead at the half.
The second half seemed to half a different sentiment to it.
Chanel Maxey (Anaheim, CA/Canyon) made three of her five three-pointers and that accounted for a game-high 21 points. She was 8-12 for the game, while the wrest the team only managed 10 of 47.
Dixie State did not go down easy, cutting the lead to 10 points three different times, but could never get it to single digits.
Coach Angie Kristensen said, “Bottom line, if we play the first 15 minutes of the game like we id the last 25, we give ourselves a good chance to win.”
Breann Hill (Harrisburg, PA/McDevitt) scored six points and left the game with 3:40 left in the first half after making layup and getting fouled. After she was fouled she went to the floor with an apparent head injury. She did not return to play.
The physical and active defense of UAA held
Johnna Brown (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial ) to just six points and eight rebounds. The Red Storm offense never seemed to have any fluidity. Dixie State shot 30.5 percent from the field.
Kristensen continued, “We didn't match their intensity. We shot poorly and turned it over way too much to beat a Top 25 team. But this is a great learning experience for us.”
Alysa Horn who had 11 rebounds and 20 points led UAA. Hanna Johansson and Nikki Aden had 15 and 13 points respectively.
Maxey and Hill were named to the AT&T Classic all tournament team for their play in the two games.
