PHOENIX, ARIZONA – Dixie State women's soccer picked the right time to break a three-match losing streak. An overtime penalty kick goal pushed the Red Storm past Grand Canyon University 3-2 in the Pacific West conference opener for both clubs.
Whitley Davis (Sandy, UT/Brighton) scored past GCU goalkeeper Milena Buchei in the 94th minute to give DSC the match victory.
Dixie State (2-3, 1-0 PACWEST) took a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute when
Carly Haycock (Bountiful. UT/Bountiful HS '06) scored off an assist from Camille Peterson.
Mikala Wilkes (Cedar Hills. UT/Lone Peak HS '06) pushed the lead to a pair of goals converting a 66th minute penalty kick.
The Antelopes (3-3, 0-1 PACWEST) responded with two goals with a minute and 16 seconds of each other in the second half. Nichole Elias netted a shot off Red Storm goalie Abby Monroe and Sasha Scott's header caught the left corner to tie the game.
The Red Storm outshot GCU 25-8 with Wilkes leading the charge with three at the goal.
Conference play continues on Saturday, September 26 at Dominican University in San Rafael, CA. Kickoff is set for 3pm Mountain. Dixie State soccer returns home to Hansen Stadium on October 8 against Chaminade University.
