Box Score ST. GEORGE, UTAH – Dixie State College played its way in to the championship game of the inaugural Pacific West Conference Little World Series with a convincing 20-7 win over Grand Canyon University Thursday night at Bruce Hurst Field.
After surrendering a run to GCU in the first, the Red Storm exploded for 18 runs in innings three through five to remain in the winner's bracket and earn a spot to win the tournament with one more victory.
Preston Grimes (Taylorsville, UT/Taylorsville) battled through 5.1 innings allowing seven runs to earn the win. Antelope starter Santos Villanueva did not make it out of the third giving up six runs on eight hits to receive the loss.
Five Red Storm players notched three or more hits.
Aaron Friend (Las Vegas. NV/Centennial HS) and
Tony Nelson (St. George. UT/Dixie) paced the team with four hits while Nelson and
Brett Adams (Sandy, UT/Alta) each knocked in four runs.
In earlier action on Day Two, the University of Puerto Rico Bayamon squeaked by UPR-Mayaguez 2-1. Grand Canyon handily defeated Hawaii Pacific 19-7 knocking the Sea Warriors to the one-loss bracket.
