Storm Walk-Off with Series Finale

Oldfield slaps RBI single in final inning

Box Score ST. GEORGE, UTAH – There's something magical about a home team celebrating on their field after a dramatic win at the end of the season. The scriptwriters could gain some new ideas after Dixie State College came back from five runs down to beat the Warriors of Lewis-Clark State College 9-8 Sunday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field.

Drew Oldfield (Aurora, CO/Rangeview) capped the comeback with a game-winning hit in the ninth.

The Red Storm reached a goal with their 30th win of the year (30-19). Lewis-Clark State dropped to 36-13.

Dixie State took a 3-1 lead after two innings, but could not hold off the Warriors. LCSC scored seven runs unanswered in frames four through six to lead 8-3.

The DSC rally began in the seventh. Tony Nelson (St. George. UT/Dixie) plated two with a single and Alex Rosenhan (Highland. UT/Alta HS) completed the four-run inning with a two-run double.

Tyson Littlewood (St. George. UT/Pine View HS) homered (6) with two outs in the eighth to tie the game 8-8.

Todd Morlock (Magna, UT /Taylorsville), who relieved starter Jayson Madson (Tremonton. UT/Bear River HS) after six innings, tossed three innings of hitless baseball (W, 4-2) while striking out three to give the Storm a shot in the ninth.

Nelson led off the final frame with a walk and Brett Adams (Sandy, UT/Alta) shot a grounder into center for a single. Jimmy Dever (Tuscon. AZ/Catalina Foothills HS) executed a perfect sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position. Rosenhan was intentionally walked to load the bags for Oldfield. On a 0-1 count, Oldfield lined a solid single past the right-fielder to score Nelson and give DSC the walk-off victory.

Dixie State finished the day with 14 hits – Oldfield with four while Nelson, Adams, Rosenhan and Littlewood each added two. Lewis-Clark also had 14 hits led by Sean Halton and Paul Martin with three a piece.

The series ended with a 2-2 split, but a couple of Red Storm hard-ballers shined. Rosenhan tallied a .636 batting average in four games with two doubles and two RBI. Oldfield went 7-for-13 with two homers and a series-high eight knocked in. Both wins were credited to relievers – Phil Finley (Washington. UT/Pine View HS) in the series-opener and Morlock today.

Dixie State continues their season participating in the Pac West/Puerto Rico Little World Series beginning Wednesday at Bruce Hurst Field. The Red Storm open up with the University of Puerto Rico –Rio Piedras in Wednesday's late game at 7pm.
