DSC Sweeps GCU to Take 3-0 Series Lead

ST. GEORGE, UTAH – The Red Storm of Dixie State lit up the Bruce Hurst Field scoreboard during Friday's doubleheader against Grand Canyon University. Scoring 25 runs over two games, Dixie State swept the Antelopes by finals of 9-4 and 16-1 in Pacific West Conference action.

 

Dixie State improved to 27-17 overall and 14-9 in the Pac West while Grand Canyon dropped to 13-32, 7-12 in the PWC.

 

In game one, Preston Grimes (Taylorsville, UT/Taylorsville) threw five quality innings to pick up his sixth win.  Todd Morlock (Magna, UT /Taylorsville) recorded a four-out save, his sixth.  #Jimmy Dever (Tuscon. AZ/Catalina Foothills HS) led the Storm with three hits including a solo homer and three RBI. (Riverton, UT/Riverton)Tony Nelson added three hits and a two-run blast. (Riverton, UT/Riverton)Drew Oldfield# blasted a long ball in the third inning for his team-high 13th home run of the season.

 

GCU's Jeff Mutchler gave GCU their first lead of the series after a two-run double in the second. LF John Stanko went deep for a solo homer in the sixth. Starter Mark Hardy (2-4) allowed eight earned runs in five innings.

 

In the nightcap, Dever blasted a three-run homer in the first inning after GCU scored in the visitor's half. The Storm blew open a 3-1 DSC lead with 13 runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

 

A pitcher's duel ensued between Dixie State's Jayson Madson (Tremonton. UT/Bear River HS) and Grand Canyon's Kevin Burbank until the fateful fifth frame.  The Storm plated nine runs with seven singles and three Antelope errors to build an 11-run lead.  DSC added four more tallies in the sixth to push the score to the 16-1 final.

Madson (4-2) tossed a complete game scattering one run on five hits and striking out seven. Burbank received the loss (1-2) after offering eight runs, four earned, on five hits in 4.1 innings.

 

DSC had 13 hits in the nightcaps paced by Brett Adams (Sandy, UT/Alta) going 3-for-5 with four knocked in. Dever added four RBI to finish with seven for the day.

 

Saturday's series finale is scheduled to begin at Noon.
