Box Score PHOENIX. ARIZ – Nine innings of baseball was not enough during Sunday's series finale between the Storm of Dixie State and the Grand Canyon Antelopes.
Behind three homeruns and clutch relief pitching. Dixie State topped GCU 10-8 in ten innings at Brazell Stadium.
DSC bounced back to the break even mark on the season at 8-8 and in the Pacific West conference (2-2).
Aaron Friend (Las Vegas. NV/Centennial HS) lit the scoreboard early with a solo homer to lead off the game. GCU knotted the game in the second off John Stanko's RBI double.
Alex Rosenhan (Highland. UT/Alta HS) knocked in the first of his three runs with a double in the fourth.
Stanko struck again in the fifth with a three-run homer as part of five unanswered runs to put GCU ahead 6-2 after five frames.
Dixie plated one in the seventh. but took a one-run lead with a big eighth inning. Rosenhan and Drew Oldfield (Aurora, CO/Rangeview) each slugged two-run homers while Friend singled home Tyson Littlewood (St. George. UT/Pine View HS). After the five run inning. Dixie led 8-7.
Grand Canyon had a chance in the ninth after pushing across the tying run with a sac fly. An infield error and two walks loaded the bases for Austin Stockfisch. Dixie's Todd Morlock (Magna, UT /Taylorsville) regained his composure and struck out Stockfisch looking to end the Antelope threat.
Dixie struck with two outs in the tenth when Tony Nelson (St. George. UT/Dixie) and Brett Adams (Sandy, UT/Alta) each singled to bring in runs. Storm reliever Nick Orgill (Idaho Falls. ID/Idaho Falls HS) allowed one hits. but closed the door getting Billy Schroeder to ground out.
Morlock (2-1) earned the win in relief of starter Preston Grimes (Taylorsville, UT/Taylorsville) and Orgill notched his second save of the season. Colin Courtland (1-2) gave up the go-ahead run in the tenth for the loss.
The Storm return to Bruce Hurst Field on Monday. March 16 to begin a series against the Academy of Arts San Francisco. Originally planned as a two-game series. the teams will play four with back-to-back doubleheaders. Monday's action begins at 4:00pm with two seven-inning games.
