DSC splits with Southern Utah in non-conference games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CEDAR CITY, Utah (DSC) – After starting at second base on the international tiebreaker, Haley Schumers (Plain City. UT/Freemont High School) scored the winning run as Dixie State defeated Southern Utah 6-5 in eight innings on Tuesday. The Thunderbirds (12-19) won the second game of the non-conference softball doubleheader 9-3 as the Red Storm (29-7) stranded 15 baserunners. Schumers, the final out of the seventh inning, began the eighth inning on second base. Ashley McFarland (Layton. UT/Layton High School) moved her up on a sacrifice bunt and Kelsey Mendenhall (Tooele. UT/Tooele High School) hit a fly ball to left field to bring her home. Brittnie Whipple, who came on to relieve Lauren Folta (Erda. UT/Tooele High School) in the sixth inning, got Southern Utah out in the bottom of the eighth to pick up the pitching win. Schumers had a home run and a single and drove in three runs to pace the Red Storm victory. Bailie Hicken (Cedar Hills. UT/Lone Peak High School) had three hits and a run batted in and drove in a run. In the second game the Red Storm left the bases loaded three times as they were unable to get the timely hits. Schumers started in the circle but only lasted one inning as she gave up three runs. Whipple pitched three innings and Jessie Kaonohi (Lancaster. CA/Antelope Valley High School) finished up. Schumers was the losing pitcher. McFarland had two hits, including a home run, while Schumers and Jaki Hawkins (Lakewood. WA/Lakes High School) also had a pair of hits apiece. The Red Storm will be on the road over the weekend. They will play Cal State San Bernadino in a doubleheader at Turlock, Calif., on Thursday, then will play three games in the Tournament of Champions on Friday, another three on Saturday and finish with a single elimination tournament on Sunday. They will return home to entertain Grand Canyon on April 11.
