Adams' Late Inning Hit Propels Dixie State Over Hawaii- Hilo

Box Score ST. GEORGE, UTAH – The first ever showdown in baseball between Dixie State College and the University of Hawaii-Hilo proved to be a hardball purist's dream. In a game that featured four lead changes and four ties, an eighth inning single by Brett Adams (Sandy, UT/Alta) pushed the Red Storm to a 9-8 victory Friday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field. Dixie State improves to 16-9 on the year and extends their lead in the Pacific West Conference with a 6-3 in-league mark. The Vulcans drop to 12-11 and 3-6 in Pac West play. The first seven innings resembled a heavyweight prize fight with both schools trading single-run jabs and multi-run body blows. It looked like we might have to go to the judges' cards, but Dixie State fought enough in the eighth and ninth to record a TKO. With the game tied 6-6 after seven, Hawaii-Hilo scored two off DSC reliever Todd Morlock (Magna, UT /Taylorsville). Gary Jones scored from third on a balk and Shane Kessel knocked in Kalehua Moniz with a one-out double to push the Vulcans ahead by two. Dixie State rallied in the eighth scoring three runs. With the bases-loaded, Tony Nelson (St. George. UT/Dixie) knocked in Abe Candaleria (Camarillo. CA/Camarillo HS) on a groundout, setting the table for Adams. On a 1-0 pitch from UHH reliever Kurtis Sherer, Adams grounded a two-run single up middle to give Dixie the ultimate lead 9-8. Morlock allowed a leadoff single in the ninth, but got a great play in the outfield by Aaron Friend (Las Vegas. NV/Centennial HS) and one by Jimmy Dever (Tuscon. AZ/Catalina Foothills HS) at short to keep Hilo off the board in the ninth. Morlock (3-1) picks up the win going the final 2.1 innings allowing two runs on five hits. Sherer (0-1) is handed the loss after surrendering the go-ahead run in his lone inning of work. Four DSC players with hitting streaks of five game or more – Dever (15), Adams (8), Friend (7) and Alex Rosenhan (Highland. UT/Alta HS) (6) – each got at least one safety to continue their roll. The Red Storm finished the game with 14 hits – paced by Adams and Rosenhan with three a piece. Adams had a game-high four RBI. Dever hit his seventh home run, a solo shot in the seventh. Hilo knocked 16 hits with Matthew Haasenritter leading the team with three including a home run and a double. Dixie State and Hawaii-Hilo play games two and three of the series on Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. Both games will be seven innings.
