Box Score 2 (DSC BASEBALL) -- ST. GEORGE, UTAH – With a chance to pull away in the Pacific West Conference baseball standings, the Red Storm had to settle for a doubleheader split with Hawaii Pacific University Tuesday at Bruce Hurst Field. Game one proved to be a battle of big innings with the home squad squeaking out an 11-10 win. A quality start by HPU's Daniel Cox paced the visitors in the finale 7-3 to avoid a four-game sweep.
Dixie State remains in first place in the conference with a 5-3 record, 15-9 overall taking three of the four games in the series. The Sea Warriors move to 19-7 and 7-5 in the Pac West.
Dixie can credit OF
Abe Candaleria (Camarillo. CA/Camarillo HS) with the offensive sparks needed to Tuesday's opener. The junior made the best of his fifth start going 3-for-3. A double with two outs scored Dixie's first run tying the game in the second. Leading off the fourth, Candaleria lifted a full-count offering from HPU starter Turhan Folse for a solo homer to left. The homer kicked off Dixie's crucial five-run fourth inning which included RBI doubles by
Tony Nelson (St. George. UT/Dixie) and
Jimmy Dever (Tuscon. AZ/Catalina Foothills HS).
Candaleria ended up knocking in the go-ahead run in the fifth. Abe singled home
Drew Oldfield (Aurora, CO/Rangeview), who tied the game earlier in the frame with a bases-clearing double, to push the Storm ahead 11-10.
Nick Orgill (Idaho Falls. ID/Idaho Falls HS) (1-1) kept Hawaii Pacific off the board over the final 2.1 innings to wrap up the victory.
Dixie State knocked 17 hits in game one with Candaleria, Nelson,
Aaron Friend (Las Vegas. NV/Centennial HS) and
Alex Rosenhan (Highland. UT/Alta HS) each having three safeties. Hawaii Pacific knocked eight hits – Derek Grace and Lester Akeo led the Sea Warriors with two hits apiece.
Game two was a pitcher's duel until the fifth inning. HPU's starter Daniel Cox kept Dixie State at bay allowing two runs, one earned, over five innings to pick up his fifth victory of 2009. His only blip was a third-inning homer to
Brett Adams (Sandy, UT/Alta).
Jayson Madson (Tremonton. UT/Bear River HS) got the start for Dixie State. His first four innings were quality – two runs on five hits. The right-hander began to tire in the fifth inning allowing two lead off walks. DSC turned the ball to lefty
Tim McMahon (Littleton. CO/Heritage) who allowed a two-out RBI single to Alex Agortsas giving HPU a 3-2 lead. The run charged to Madson (1-2) turned out to HPU's game winner.
The Sea Warriors added four critical insurance runs in the sixth to increase their lead to 7-2. Dixie pushed one across in the final inning on
Jordan Hanley (Las Vegas. NV/Bonanza)'s RBI groundout, but fell four runs short in the end.
