Torrent offense leads Red Storm to Sweep of Urban Knights

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ST. GEORGE, UTAH – After scoring 23 runs in the first two games of the series with the Academy of Arts University Urban Knights, the Dixie State baseball team kept their collective feet on the pedal during Tuesday's doubleheader sweep. In game one, an eight-run fourth inning pushed Dixie toward a 14-5 win. Five Red Storm pitchers came within one out of a no-hitter in the 15-1 late-afternoon finale. Dixie State (12-8, 2-2 Pac West) won its fifth consecutive game. The Urban Knights of AAU dropped to 0-12 after being outscored 52-6 in the four-game series. AAU scored in the first inning of the DH opener when starting pitcher Alex Rosenthal was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded scoring Chris Vargas. Rosenthal surrendered the advantage in the Dixie first. Brett Adams (Sandy, UT/Alta) doubled home Aaron Friend (Las Vegas. NV/Centennial HS) to tie the game and Alex Rosenhan (Highland. UT/Alta HS) plated Tony Nelson (St. George. UT/Dixie) with a sacrifice fly. DSC pushed to the score to 3-1 when catcher Tim Mott (Las Vegas. NV/Las Vegas HS) scored on a wild pitch. AAU got back within one thanks again to Rosenthal – his two-out RBI single in the third made the score 3-2. The Red Storm used their third and fourth innings to tally 11 runs and pull away from the Urban Knights. Jesse Stone (St George. UT/Snow Canyon HS)'s two-run triple was the catalyst in the home third. Eight runs on seven hits broke open the game for Dixie State. Drew Oldfield (Aurora, CO/Rangeview) and Tyson Littlewood (St. George. UT/Pine View HS) each hit three-run homers in the deciding inning. Preston Grimes (Taylorsville, UT/Taylorsville) (3-0) tossed four innings allowing two runs on five hits to remain undefeated on the season. Relievers Jake Bankowski (Woods Cross. UT/Woods Cross HS) and Phil Finley (Washington. UT/Pine View HS) each allowed at least one earned run, but otherwise kept the AAU bats at bay late. Rosenthal (0-2) ceded 12 runs, eight earned, over 3.1 innings. In game two, a handful of DSC hurlers lost a chance to no-hit the Urban Knights in the final inning. Starter Jayson Madson (Tremonton. UT/Bear River HS) (1-1) and Kris Cichoski (Las Vegas. NV/Durnago HS) both threw two innings without allowing a runner aboard. Lefty Tim McMahon (Littleton. CO/Heritage) and Todd Morlock (Magna, UT /Taylorsville) kept the Urban Knights off the hit column over the next two innings. Morlock did allow a runner to reach after an infield error, but got an inning-ending double play to face the absolute minimum amount of hitters through six. Nick Orgill (Idaho Falls. ID/Idaho Falls HS), the side-armer from Idaho, retired the first two batters of the seventh and faced Florentino Ubungen with the chance to complete a no-no. With a 0-1 count, Ubungen squashed the no-hitter and the shutout with a monstrous blast over the wall in left. Orgill recovered and forced Matt Ko to line out to close out the one-hitter. Offensively for Dixie State, Jimmy Dever (Tuscon. AZ/Catalina Foothills HS) went 3-for-4 including two homers knocking in five to pace the Red Storm. Stone and Oldfield also went deep during the game while Adams, Rosenhan and Jordan Hanley (Las Vegas. NV/Bonanza) each had a double. DSC had 16 hits on the game and scored in every inning sans the third. Dixie State will take the remained of the Spring Break week off and return to Brice Hurst Field Monday, March 23 to open a crucial four-game conference set with the Sea Warriors of Hawaii Pacific University. First pitch on Monday is scheduled for 4pm. DixieAthletics.com will have live audio with John Potter for every game of the Pac West conference series.
