Storm Shutout by Mesa State (02/23/09)

GRAND JUNCTION. COLO – The Dixie State Red Storm baseball team was held to just three hits over seven innings in Monday's 5-0 loss to the Mesa State College Mavericks at Suplizio Field. The second game of a planned doubleheader was rained out.



The Red Storm dropped to 5-5 while Mesa State improved to 9-2.



Senior starter Skyler Southwick (Las Vegas. NV/Basic HS) (Las Vegas/Basic) battled the Maverick's Jason Fronczak through four scoreless innings before the home club notched the game's first run on an RBI single by Bobby Leigh in the fifth.



Southwick recorded two outs in the sixth before allowing a single and a wild pitch. Todd Morlock (Magna, UT /Taylorsville) (Magna/Hillcrest/SLCC) entered the finish the innings but surrendered a two-run double to Craig Lanzarotta and a two-run single to Chris Cassell. The Mavericks opened up a five-run lead.



Fronczak walked the first three Red Storm hitters in the visiting seventh. but Mesa closer Aaron Guinn struck out Tyson Littlewood (St. George. UT/Pine View HS). Jesse Stone (St George. UT/Snow Canyon HS) and Aaron Friend (Las Vegas. NV/Centennial HS) in a row to earn the save and preserve the Maverick victory.



Southwick (1-2) allowed three earned runs on four hits in 5.2 innings striking out four. Fronczak (2-0) struck out 10 DSC batters and allowed just three hits over six innings.



Each DSC hit was to lead off an inning – a Friend double in the 4th. a Tony Nelson (St. George. UT/Dixie) single in the 5th and a bunt single by Stone in the 7th.



Dixie State and Mesa State will meet up again on Tuesday. March 3 at Bruce Hurst Field for a doubleheader beginning at 2pm.
