Box Score 2 ST. GEORGE. UTAH – After a convincing 12-2 win in Thursday's opener. the Dixie State Red Storm came back from as many as five runs down to beat Central Washington University 9-8 in the series finale completing a four-game sweep at Bruce Hurst Field.
Dixie State improves to 5-4 on the season winning its fourth straight. The CWU Wildcats remain winless in 2009 at 0-8.
In game one. junior pitcher Preston Grimes (Taylorsville, UT/Taylorsville) (Taylorsville) tossed seven innings giving up two runs on eight hits (W. 2-0). Grimes got plenty of early support from the Red Storm offense. The first four DSC hitters reached safely leading to four runs. The inning was highlighted by an RBI single by Brett Adams (Sandy, UT/Alta) (Sandy. Alta) and a run-scoring double by Jimmy Dever (Tuscon. AZ/Catalina Foothills HS) (Tucson/Catalina Foothills).
Aaron Friend (Las Vegas. NV/Centennial HS) (Las Vegas/Centennial) had three hits. walked once and scored three times. Adams capped the Red Storm's early win with a bases-clearing double in the seventh to finish with four RBI.
In the second afternoon game. Dixie State spotted the Wildcats a lead. but the longball and two-out offense led to a big comeback.
DSC starter Tyson Bailey (Mesa. AZ/Westwood HS) (Mesa/Westwood/SLCC) surrendered five runs. four earned in just over an inning. CWU's Ricky McKinney doubled to right-center knocking Bailey out of the game. Jayson Madson (Tremonton. UT/Bear River HS) (Tremonton/Bear River/CEU) entered in relief and immediately allowed a two-run double to A.J. Gosney. An RBI sac fly from Josh Murillo completed the Central second and gave the Wildcats a five-run lead.
With two outs in the second. DH Jordan Hanley (Las Vegas. NV/Bonanza) (Las Vegas/Bonanza) drew an important walk off starter Justin Reed. Tyson Littlewood (St. George. UT/Pine View HS) (St. George/Pine View) blasted the first pitch he saw over the wall in left-center for a home run (1) to cut the lead to 6-3.
Again with two down in the fourth. Hanley spark another rally with a double. Littlewood walked and scored from first after a throwing error by Central shortstop Kevin Walkenhauer. Jesse Stone (St George. UT/Snow Canyon HS) (St. George/Snow Canyon) forced a balk by attempting to steal home cutting CSU's advantage to one.
Dever knotted things at seven all with a line drive homer to left beginning the fifth inning. Adams and Dever each hit RBI singles in the sixth off Derek Shoemaker (0-3). with two outs already committed. to give the Red Storm a 9-7 lead.
DSC reliever Todd Morlock (Magna, UT /Taylorsville) (Magna/Hillcrest/SLCC) began his final inning of relief and allowed a double and two singles with one out. Nick Orgill (Idaho Falls. ID/Idaho Falls HS) (Idaho Falls/SLCC) was summoned to shut the door. He allowed a single to load the bases. but induced CWU's Michael Johnson into a 6-3 game-ending double play preserving the Red Storm win.
Morlock (1-0) got credit for the win and Orgill notched his first save.
Dixie State travels to Colorado on Monday. February 23 to face Mesa State College for a doubleheader beginning at 12 Noon Mountain. The Red Storm return home Tuesday. March 3 against Mesa State in another doubleheader at 2pm.
