Streaks were snapped in a very positive way Thursday night at Hansen Stadium for the Dixie State men's soccer team. By defeating the visitors from Academy of Art University 3-0, DSC snapped a four-match losing streak and a length scoreless drought.
The Red Storm (6-10-1, 4-9) shutout a conference opponent for the first time since October 8, a 4-0 win over Chaminade. AAU was held to just four shots in the rematch with Dixie State – the Urban Knights beat DSC 3-0 on September 28.
Starting in the 36th minute, Dixie State scored two goals in a minute and 22 seconds.
Josh Hernandez (Kaysville, UT/Davis) scored a breakaway goal (35:36) on a beautiful center pass from
Kevin Young (Salt Lake City. UT/Kearns). Hernandez's goal broke a Dixie State scoreless string of 404 minutes dating back to the beginning of a match against Hawaii Pacific on October 22.
Brent Knoblauch (Seattle. WA/Snow Canyon) found the net from 20-yards out at 36:48 to give the Storm a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
Francisco Arellano (Ogden, UT/Pine View) pushed the DSC lead to three goals going top shelf on the left side after a 25-yard cross from Hernandez in the 64th minute.
Tyler McAninch (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial) made one save to earn the victory in goal.
Dixie State will wrap up the 2009 regular season on Saturday night against Notre Dame de Namur University at 5:30pm. The match will be held at Dixie High School.
