ST. GEORGE, UTAH – The Dixie State men's soccer team experienced one of the most crushing ways to lose a match Saturday night at Hansen Stadium. Hawaii-Hilo took possession of the ball with 15 seconds left in the half and used a breakaway to score the game-winner with a second left in regulation to defeat the Red Storm 1-0 in Pacific West Conference play.
The last second loss for Dixie State (3-6-1, 1-4 Pac West) comes off the heels of a dominating win against Chaminade on Thursday night. Hawaii-Hilo (5-6, 4-1 Pac West) moved into second place in the conference with 12 points.
After both teams had chances in the match to score goals, the ultimate decider came in the final minute. Dixie State tried to pass the ball deep into Vulcan territory, but the ball was intercepted by a Jaaziel Garcia header. The ball ended up off the foot of Luis Segovia who set up a perfect breakaway for Eduardo Gonzalez who beat DSC goalie
Tyler McAninch (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial) for the late-second victory.
Josh Hernandez (Kaysville, UT/Davis) led Dixie State with shots including one on goal.
The Red Storm will look to bounce back Monday night when they host the Sea Warriors of Hawaii Pacific University beginning at 7:00pm.
