Wilkes get hat trick in Dixie State win over Academy of Arts (10/10/08)

ST GEORGE. UT- For the second game in a row a Dixie State women's soccer player recorded a hat trick. In Wednesday 5-1 win over Mesa State Wendy Stratford (Layton, UT/Layton) scored three goals. Tonight. it was Mikala Wilkes (Cedar Hills. UT/Lone Peak HS '06)' turn. Her three goals lead Dixie State(7-4-1) to a 5-0 win over the Academy of Arts University (1-5-2).



Wilkes' first goal came in the 17th mintue. when Dixie State forced AAU goalie from the net on shot that she blocked successfully. Wilkes then gingerly lobbed it into the net. letting the gusting win knock it down and into the back of the net. Dixie State led at the break 1-0.



In the second half. the Dixie State second goal was scored by Erika Mouritsen (Wellsville. UT/Mountain Crest HS '07) on a breakaway goal in the 48th minute.



From here it was all DSC. Wilkes added her second on a header on a corner kick from Jessica Nelson-Mortensen in the 61st minute.



The fourth goal was netted by Wendy Stratford (Layton, UT/Layton) in the 68th minute on a cross from Wilkes. The goalie had chased Wilkes away from the net and she found Stratford for any easy tap in on the open net.



The final goal came in the 74th minute on a corner kick from Nelson-Mortenson finding Mikala Wilkes (Cedar Hills. UT/Lone Peak HS '06) for the score.



The Dixie State defense held AAU to only 3 shots on the night. Their first shot did not come until the 70th minute of the match. DSC was able to get 26 shots off.



DSC goalkeeper April Hansen (American Fork. UT/American Fork) recored her second shoutout of the year.



Dixie State will play host next week to two home PacWest matches. Wednesday vs Hawaii Pacific at 7 PM and Friday at 4:30 PM vs. Hawaii Hilo. Both games will be played at Hansen Stadium.
