Nicole Yazzie

Nicole Yazzie is in her ninth season on the Utah Tech women's basketball coaching staff, and begins her second year as associate head coach.

Yazzie has been an integral part of the Trailblazer coaching staff since coming to the Trailblazers prior to the 2016-17 season. Under her guidance, the program has seen marked improvements in each season, capped by a 19-12 record last season, the program’s best mark since the 2019-20 campaign, which was its last season at the NCAA D-II level. The Trailblazers also qualified for the 2023 Western Athletic Conference Tournament, where they recorded their first-ever Division-I postseason victory.

Last season, Coach Yazzie helped lead the Trailblazers to an 18-14 overall record, including a 12-8 mark in Western Athletic2024-25UTWBB_Yazziefampic Conference play, which was good for fourth place in the conference standings and a first round bye into the 2024 WAC Tournament.

Prior to coming to Utah Tech, Yazzie served as women’s basketball assistant coach and sports information director at Montana State-Northern from 2014-16. While at MSUN, Yazzie helped lead the Skylights to consecutive NAIA tournament appearances, including the Elite Eight in 2015. Yazzie coached the Frontier Conference MVP and Defensive MVP in both 2015 (A’jha Ewards, Taylor Cummings) and 2016 (Natalee Faupel, Jacy Thompson). Prior to MSUN, Yazzie served as a varsity assistant coach at Corner Canyon HS in Draper, Utah, during the 2013-14 season.

Before coaching, Yazzie played four seasons at Westminster College from 2009-13. She led the Griffins to four consecutive NAIA tournament appearances, on her way to becoming the all-time leader in 3-point field goals made and career free throw percentage at Westminster.

She earned first team All-American honors as a senior and was a four-time All-Frontier Conference first team member.  Yazzie earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Westminster in 2013.

Yazzie prepped at Bingham High School, where she was a four-year starter at point guard for the Miners. During her time at Bingham, the team went 85-11 (.885) and won the 2007 Utah Class 5A State Championship. Yazzie averaged 7.74 points per game during her prep career and was twice named First Team All-State (2009 Salt Lake Tribune, 2008 Deseret News). The Deseret News also named her Second Team All-State in 2009 and 2007 following an Honorable Mention All-State in 2006. After winning the 2007 state championship, Yazzie was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. She is the Bingham High School career leader in 3-point field goals made and ranked 15th in the state as a senior with her 1.04 makes per game. Yazzie is also a four-time member of the Honor Roll for her performance in the classroom.

Coach Yazzie and her wife Courtney are the parents of son Griff, and their dogs Duke and Cubbie.
