Andrew May is in his third season as a Trailblazer assistant coach following a four-year stint as director of basketball operations at BYU for Dixie State alum and DSU Hall of Famer Dave Rose from 2015-19.
Coach May was part of three-straight Cougar NIT postseason appearances, highlighted by a trip to the semifinals at Madison Square Garden in 2016. Under his direction as team academic advisor, BYU basketball posted at least a 3.0 GPA in 12 out of 16 semesters, while BYU earned the 2017-18 NABC Team Academic Excellence Award, and he mentored CoSIDA Academic All-American Eric Mika. Additionally, Coach May’s duties included game preparation, recruiting visits, analytics specialist, booster and alumni relations, camp director, daily program scheduler and communicator, and travel coordinator.
Prior to his time at BYU, Coach May served as an assistant coach at Salt Lake CC, where he helped lead the Bruins to four SWAC championships and to a pair of NJCAA national tournament appearances. During his four years at SLCC, May’s primary responsibilities included recruiting, skill development, analytics, technology, film coordinator, opponent scouting and game prep. During May’s tenure he coached five All-Americans, including NBA player Gary Payton II. May is fluent in Spanish and recruited several international players to SLCC. May and the SLCC coaching staff also saw 15 players move on to compete at the NCAA Division I level.
Coach May began his coaching career as an assistant varsity coach at Orem (UT) High School from 2003-04. He played basketball at Lone Peak (UT) High School, where he still holds the single-season and single-game assist records.
Coach May holds Bachelor’s (2010) and Master’s (2011) degrees in Exercise Science from BYU, where he also served as men’s basketball head student team manager from 2007-11. He and his wife Marissa are the parents of five children: Benson, Ella, Karsten, Luke and Will.
