Steve Clark is in his second season with the Trailblazer football program, and in his first season as the program's academic coordinator. In 2024, Clark joined the program as its tight ends coach.
Coach Clark moved south to St. George after serving as tight ends coach at BYU for eight seasons from 2016-23. During the 2020 campaign, he played a large part in the development of a Cougar offense that ranked third in the NCAA FBS subdivision in scoring offense (43.5 ppg), sixth in total offense (522.2 ypg), and eighth in the country in passing offense (332.1 ypg). That season BYU finished with an 11-1 overall record and ranked 11th in the country.
He developed freshman TE Isaac Rex into a 2020 Freshman All-American. That season, Rex finished third in the FBS in touchdown receptions (12) and wound up with 37 receptions for 429 yards.
Rex was the second of two freshman All-Americans mentored by Coach Clark during his tenure on the Cougars’ staff. In 2017, Matt Bushman earned All-American accolades and was BYU’s leading receiver for three-straight seasons in 2017, 2018 and 2019.
Prior to his second stint at BYU, Clark served as offensive coordinator at both Weber State (2014-16) and Southern Utah (2008-13). While at SUU, he helped lead a record-breaking Thunderbird offense and recorded the program’s five top single-season passing attempts efforts, the four top single-season receiving yard marks, and five of the top six passing yards and completion season standards during his six seasons in Cedar City.
He also mentored a pair of Great West Conference offensive MVPs in quarterback Brad Sorensen and wide receiver Tysson Poots. Sorenson finished his career as SUU’s all-time leading passer and was drafted by the then-San Diego Chargers in the 2012 NFL Draft.
From there, he spent two seasons at Weber State, where he coached 10 Wildcats who went on to earn all-Big Sky Conference offensive honors.
Clark’s first go-around at BYU came as a graduate assistant (2005-07). Prior to that, he had coaching stops at both Utah, where he was a defensive assistant on Urban Meyer’s staff and was part of the Utes’ 2004 Fiesta Bowl winning 12-0 team, and at St. Mary’s College as passing game coordinator in 2003.
In addition, Coach Clark spent three seasons as offensive coordinator at Provo HS.
A native of Provo, Coach Clark earned his Bachelor’s degree in Communication at BYU in 1992. He and his wife, Suzanne, are the parents of four children – Alex, Emily, current Trailblazer assistant coach Jamison, and Maggie.
