Before Utah Tech: First team all-Valley Conference and all-state (3C2A) selection at Modesto JC … was named academic all-state and was one of nine student-athletes across the state to earn a 4.00 GPA … earned three varsity letters in football at Oakdale High School and was an all-Valley Oak League selection as a senior … also lettered in wrestling and track & field as was part of four combined league championships, including three in track … was a member of the Oakdale HS bass fishing team.

Why Gavin chose Utah Tech: "I chose Utah Tech because the community was very appealing to me - not too big but not too small of any area with lots of things to do and explore. I wanted to go to a program with coaches that I could learn a lot from and I felt this place would offer me that.”
