Trailblazer Swimming Opens 2026-27 Season at CMU Shootout This Weekend

Utah Tech swimming's 2026-27 season gets off the blocks this weekend as the Trailblazers travel to Grand Junction to compete at the Colorado Mesa Intermountain Shootout.  

The two-day meet will be held on Friday and Saturday at the CMU El Pomar Natatorium. Friday's opening session will begin at 4 p.m. (MT), while Saturday's session to start at 10 a.m. (MT).  

The Trailblazers are slated to swim against the host Mavericks, along with BYU, Utah, Adams State and Western Colorado. 
 
COACHING STAFF: Utah Tech alumnus Shawn King (Utah Tech, 2014) begins his fourth season as head coach of the Trailblazer program. 
        Last season, King led the Trailblazers to a seventh place finish in their debut at the 2025 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) championships, at which Utah Tech came away with one podium finish, three school records, and several top-10 all-time marks.
        In his first season poolside at Utah Tech, he guided the team to its second fastest season in school history, breaking seven school records, while collecting three All-WAC honors. In addition, the Trailblazers combined to post 75% life best times in competed events during the season.
        Utah Tech also performed in the classroom, as the team earned 2024-25 CSCAA Division I Scholar All-America honors with a cumulative 3.62 GPA.
        Coach King is joined poolside by first-year assistant coach Justin Wright (Arizona, 2018). 

THE 2026-27 ROSTER: Utah Tech returns 18 swimmers from last year's squad, 14 of whom are upperclassmen, including four current school record holders, headlined by seniors Cera Mallory and Mary Sims Cross.
        Mallory enters her final season as the school record holder in four distance freestyle events, including the 500 (4:53.19 in 2026), 1,000 (10:06.78 in 2024) and 1,650-yard (16:56.64 in 2025), and she established a new school record in the 5,000-meter open water freestyle (1:05:54 in 2026). Mallory closed last season as Utah Tech's top performer in the 100 breast (1:03.54), 200 free (1:49.77), 200 breast (2:19.69), 1,000 free (10:26.78) and 1,650 free (17:01.58). 
        Meanwhile Sims Cross, who broke the school record and podiumed at the MPSF championship meet in the 200 IM (2:02.22), also clocked team season best times in both the 100 back (54.47) and 200 back (2:00.56). 
        Junior sprinter Gabby Henry also returns after a banner sophomore campaign in 2025-26, during which she became the first Trailblazer to clock a sub-23 second 50 free time (22.98) and broke the school record in the 50 fly (25.45). In addition, Henry posted the team's season-best times in both the 100 free (50.99) and 100 fly (55.02). 
        In all, Utah Tech has five seniors leading its veteran-laden squad, including Kaiya Lawson, Sorina Rom and Naomi Nakaya, who recorded the team's season-best time in the in the 200 fly (2:04.51) last year, while junior 200 breast school record holder Alyssa Gordon (2:15.80 in 2025) swam the Blazers' top time in the 400 IM (4:31.78) last season. 
 
NEXT UP FOR THE TRAILBLAZERS: Utah Tech will return to action next weekend at the Pepperdine Rodionoff Invitational.
