Utah Tech opens Big Sky play this week on the road traveling to Portland State on Thursday night and Northern Arizona on Saturday afternoon.

BIG SKY OPENER
The Trailblazers are 3-3 in conference openers in Divison I play with sweeps in 2021, 2024 & 2025.

It is the second straight season the Trailblazers open conference play on the road after sweeping Southern Utah in Cedar City last season.

The Trailblazers went 7-6 in conference openers from 2007-19 and are 10-9 overall in conference openers in the NCAA era.

TRAILBLAZERS SWEEP PAIR OF MATCHES AT UTAH TECH TOURNAMENT
The Trailblazers opened their home slate last weekend at the Utah Tech Tournament sweeping both UC Riverside & Chicago State at Burns Arena.

Utah Tech topped UCR coming back to win set one, 27-25 and took sets two & three, 25-17, 25-20.

A day later, the Trailblazers hit a season-high .435 as a team, the fourth-highest hitting percentage in a match in program history, and won sets, 25-11, 25-13 & 25-13.

DAHLE EARNS UTAH TECH TOURNAMENT MVP HONORS & ROE/ASIATA TABBED TO ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
Junior middle blocker Shaylee Dahle notched a pair of 10-kill performances in the Utah Tech Tournament in sweeps over UC Riverside & Chicago State.

The Salt Lake CC transfer hit .909 on Friday against the Highlanders & added five blocks (two solo), two digs and a service ace in the tournament.

Asiata matched Dahle with 10 kills in each of the two matches and added four digs, a solo block and an assist in the tournament.

Finally, Roe totaled 39 assists in the two contests tallying 18 assists against UC Riverside & led the Trailblazers on Saturday with 21 assists against the Cougars.

GLANCE AT THE PORTLAND STATE VIKINGS
Portland State is 4-7 on the season with wins over Nevada (3-2), Murray State (3-0), Prairie View A&M (3-0) & UTRGV (3-0).

The Vikings are 1-0 at home this season with their lone win coming over Nevada on Aug. 30 & are coming off a pair of road matches at Oregon & Oregon State last weekend.

PSU is coming off a 11-17 overall record in 2025 and tied for seventh in the Big Sky along with Idaho State with a 7-9 mark in the conference.

Picked eighth in the Big Sky preseason poll, the Vikings are second in the conference in service aces per set (1.83), service aces (73), fifth in attacks per set (33.68) & sixth in digs per set (13.53).

Senior setter Ava Blascziek leads the Big Sky in service aces (21), is tied for first in aces per set (0.53) & seventh in assists per set (6.33). Freshman opposite hitter Katarina Kosic ranks sixth in the league in hitting percentage (.351).

Head coach Michael Seemann is in his 20th season leading the Vikings to 297 wins.

GLANCE AT THE NORTHERN ARIZONA LUMBERJACKS
Northern Arizona is 7-5 on the season coming off a pair of wins last weekend at the San Francisco Challenge defeating California Baptist in four sets & sweeping Texas Southern.

The Lumberjacks also have victories over Southeastern Louisiana, Bradley, Western Illinois, UC Riverside & Omaha.

NAU claimed the Big Sky regular season crown last season posting a 13-5 mark & a 23-7 overall record.

Picked second in the Big Sky preseason poll, the Lumberjacks are second in the conference in digs per set (15.34), opponent hitting percentage (.162), digs (721) & total attacks (1,648). NAU is third in blocks (114.0), kills (564) & attacks per set (35.06).

Junior middle blocker Gigi Greenlee is second in the Big Sky in hitting percentage (.387), fourth in blocks (57) & sixth in blocks per set (1.21)

Senior outside hitter Hannah Stoddard is second in the conference in kills (164) & third in kills per set (3.57) and sophomore libero Lilly Holmes is eighth in digs per set (3.68).

Head coach Ken Murphy is in his 14th season at NAU and has earned 230 victories during his time in Flagstaff.

SERIES HISTORY VS. PORTLAND STATE & NORTHERN ARIZONA
This will be the first-ever meeting for the Trailblazers against Portland State and fourth against Northern Arizona.

Utah Tech and Northern Arizona met twice in 2024 meeting once in St. George and once in Flagstaff falling in both contests.

The Trailblazers topped the Lumberjacks in four sets on the road in 2022 for their lone win over NAU and the two teams meet in St. George on Nov. 18.

WHERE THE TRAILBLAZERS RANK IN BIG SKY/NCAA IN 2026
As a team, the Trailblazers lead the Big Sky in assists per set (12.29) & kills per set (13.50), rank second in attacks per set (36.79 - 19th in nation) and are third in hitting percentage (.235), blocks per set (2.45) & digs per set (14.97).

Treanor leads the Big Sky in service aces per set (0.53) & is second in in service aces (18).

Asiata ranks fourth in the conference in kills per set (3.32) and Lusia Langi is fifth in blocks per set (1.24).

Laufiso is tied for eighth in the Big Sky in digs (120) & ninth in digs per set (3.53).

Dahle leads the Big Sky in hitting percentage (.481).

NEW YEAR, NEW CONFERENCE
On June 25, 2025, Utah Tech announced that it had accepted an invitation to join the Big Sky Conference beginning on July 1, 2026.

The Big Sky will have 11 members in 2026 as the Trailblazers will be joined by Southern Utah as new conference members this season.

Northern Colorado won the Big Sky tournament in 2025 while Northern Arizona claimed the regular season championship last season with a 13-3 mark.

The Trailblazers will play home and away against eight conference opponents while only hosting Idaho and only traveling to Eastern Washington.

TRAILBLAZERS PICKED SEVENTH IN BIG SKY PRESEASON POLL
The Trailblazers were selected seventh in the Big Sky Preseason Coaches' Poll released on Aug. 19 racking up 57 points and one first-place vote.

With the Trailblazers one of four teams to earn at least one first-place vote, Northern Colorado, the 2025 Big Sky tournament champion, was picked as the conference favorite earning 88 points.

Northern Arizona, who won the Big Sky regular season championship a season ago, was tabbed second with 85 points followed by a tie between Idaho State and Montana for third with 72 points apiece.

Weber State (69 pts.) and Montana State (61 pts.) followed in fifth and sixth, respectively, with the Trailblazers in seventh with 57 points. Portland State (43 pts.), Idaho (25 pts.), Eastern Washington (18 pts.) and Southern Utah (15 pts.) rounded out the poll.

ON THE ROAD
Since joining the NCAA ranks in 2006, Utah Tech has recorded a 109-111 (.495) record in true-road matches and has logged a winning record on the road nine times (2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019 & 2025).

Additionally, the Trailblazers have posted a 53-57 (.482) record in neutral-site contests.

The Trailblazers' six road wins last season were their most in the Division I era and were their most road wins since winning nine in 2018.

UP NEXT
The Trailblazers return home to open a four-match homestand starting next Tuesday (Sept. 29) against Southern Utah (1-9) at Burns Arena. It will be Teddy Bear Toss Night as the Trailblazers will be raising money for Elks Lodge #1743.
