Utah Tech dropped a heartbreaking 10-7 decision in 14 innings to California Baptist in the quarterfinal round of the 2026 University Credit Union Western Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday afternoon at Hohokam Stadium.
Â
The loss moved the Trailblazers into the one-loss bracket and into an elimination game vs. No. 5 seed Abilene Christian on Thursday night at approximately 8:30 p.m. (MT).Â
Â
Down 5-4 after eight innings complete, Utah Tech (34-23) managed to push across the tying run with two outs in the top of the ninth to force extra innings.
Andrew Pyle led off the frame with a sharp single to right and would scamper to second base on a Lancer fielding error.
Â
Pyle was lifted for pinch-runner
Ethan Gardner, who advanced to third on a
Petey Soto Jr. sacrifice bunt, and sprinted home on a
Kyle McDaniel run-scoring fly out.
Â
The Trailblazers had traffic on the base paths in each of the next four extra frames, but were unable to push across a go-ahead run, with two of those rally chances getting snuffed out by CBU double plays.Â
Â
Utah Tech finally broke through in the 14
th with a pair of runs to jump out to a 7-5 lead.
Hudson Manwaring started the rally with lead-off single and raced to third when
Miller Durham doubled off the batter's eye in straight-away centerfield.
Â
Finnegan Stewart then stepped up and lined a single to the gap in right center to plate Manwaring and move Durham to third.
Â
Ty Johnsen would later drive in Durham on a fielder's choice as Utah Tech headed to the home 14
th three outs away from victory.
Â
CBU (44-13) quickly answered with three-straight hits open its half of the stanza, with Bryce McFeely tying the game with a two-run single.
Â
Then with two on and two outs, Matt Chavez ended the game with a walk-off, three-run home run.
Â
Utah Tech rapped out 16 hits in loss, led by Durham, who went 4-for-7 with that double and one run scored. Stewart also tripled and doubled twice as part of a three-hit day, while Manwaring, Pyle and Soto Jr. had two safeties apiece.
Â
Of note, Thursday's 14-inning game was Utah Tech's longest game, in terms of innings played, in the program's 20-year NCAA era.Â
