Utah Tech could not recover from a late Texan offensive surge as the Trailblazers dropped the opening game of their WAC first-place showdown series to visiting Tarleton State, 9-6, on Friday night at Bruce Hurst Field.
Â
Tarleton State (29-16/9-4 WAC) drew first blood on the very first pitch of the game when lead-off hitter Jake Tatom launched a solo home run over the wall in right centerfield.
Â
The Trailblazers looked primed to tie or take the lead during their first swings of the night, loading the bases with one out in the home first. However the Texans turned the Blazers away with their lead intact.
Â
Trailing 3-0 in the fifth, Utah Tech (29-17/6-4 WAC) finally broke through with its first run of game, which came on a two-out
Mays Madsen RBI-single.
Â
The Texans responded with another run in the seventh, but Utah Tech clapped right back after the stretch when after
Petey Soto Jr. reached on a lead single,
Kyle McDaniel connected for his sixth homer of the season to pull the Blazers to within a run at 4-3.
Â
Unfortunately Tarleton State quelled any momentum McDaniel's blast may have created as the Texans struck for five runs in the eighth to extend to a 9-3 advantage.
Â
Utah Tech put together one last charge in its half of the eighth, again loading the bases with one out.Â
Â
And this time the offense took advantage as Soto Jr. and McDaniel each drove in runs on consecutive singles, while Madsen collected his second RBI of the night on a fielder's choice, which trimmed the deficit to three runs.
Â
However Texan closer Tai Phetluangsy (S, 5) managed to record the final out in the eighth, and induced a crucial double play with the tying run at the plate in Blazer ninth to snuff out another possible Utah Tech rally.Â
Â
Utah Tech wound up with nine hits on the night, with Soto Jr. leading the way with three safeties and two runs scored.Â
Â
McDaniel and Madsen each went 2-of-4 at the plate and combined for five RBI.Â
Â
The two teams will play the middle game of their three-game WAC weekend series on Saturday afternoon beginning at 2:05 p.m. (MT).
