Utah Tech was done in by a pair of big UNLV innings as the Trailblazers dropped an 8-6 decision on Tuesday night at Bruce Hurst Field.
Â
After playing to a scoreless stalemate over the first two innings, UNLV struck for three runs in each of the next two frames to bolt out to a 6-0 lead.
Â
Utah Tech (22-14/2-1 WAC) managed to get one of those runs back in home fourth thanks to a
Mays Madsen RBI-groundout, then rallied for four runs in the sixth to cut the deficit to 6-5.
Â
The Trailblazers opened the sixth with three-straight base hits, including consecutive doubles from
Ty Johnsen and
Finnegan Stewart, the latter of which chased home
Miller Durham, who reached on a lead-off single.
Â
Johnsen later scored on a wild pitch, while
Petey Soto Jr. and
Hudson Manwaring each singled in runs as Utah Tech sent 10 batters to the plate.
Â
The game remained a one-run affair until the ninth, when the Rebels (22-15) pushed across two insurance runs to stretch their lead to 8-5.
Â
Utah Tech mounted one last charge in the bottom of the ninth when after a Durham walk and a second Stewart double, Madsen blooped a one-out opposite field single to shallow left field to score Durham and trim the Rebel lead to two runs.
Â
However that would be as close as Utah Tech would get as UNLV reliever Ryan Marton (S, 1) retired the final two Blazers he faced to end the game.Â
Â
Stewart went 3-for-4 at the plate with a walk, one RBI and one run scored to go with his two doubles. Meanwhile Manwaring, Durham and Madsen collected two hits apiece as the Trailblazers finished with 12 safeties on the night. Â
Utah Tech wraps up its eight-game homestand on Wednesday night when the Trailblazers play host to Washington State. First pitch at Bruce Hurst Field is set for 6:05 p.m. (MT).
