Trailblazers Drop Pair on Opening Day of UNLV Red & Black Classic

(Las Vegas - March 6, 2026) - The Trailblazers opened day one of the UNLV Red & Black Classic on Friday falling 3-1 to Loyola Marymount and 13-5 in six innings to host UNLV at Eller Media Softball Stadium.

Utah Tech (8-13) outhit LMU (16-5), 7-5 in the first contest with freshman Summer Sanderson tallying a pair of singles and the Trailblazers added one double apiece from Lauren Jones & Jayda Gleave.

Gleave scored UT's lone run of the game while Sadie Phillips drove home an RBI.

In the circle, freshman Delaney Wright tossed five innings allowing five hits, three runs, two earned and struck out six before Riley Price threw the final two innings.

The nightcap saw a two-hit performance from Kinley Pappas who finished with a single, double, two RBI and run scored and got hits from six other Trailblazers.

Sanderson and Maka Sonognini each drove in one RBI apiece and five different Trailblazers scored one run each.

Three hurlers combined to toss 5.1 innings with Sauren Garton going three innings before giving way to Cemryn Pickett for 1.1 innings and Price for the final inning.

How It Happened vs. LMU
The Lions struck first with a run in the top of the first after a Trailblazer throwing error.

LMU got on the board again with a run in the third on an RBI double and pushed their lead to 3-0 with a solo home run in the fifth.

The Trailblazers answered back with their lone run of the contest in the bottom of the fifth getting a two-out RBI single by Phillips to drive home Gleave from third base to cut the Lions' lead to 3-1.

After stranding Sanderson and Jones on base in the sixth, the Trailblazers were retired in order in the seventh to drop a low-scoring affair.

How It Happened at UNLV
UNLV (10-11) got the scoring started in the second game with a grand slam in the bottom of the second.

The Trailblazers quickly answered with a five-run third inning getting the scoring started with an RBI single by Sonognini followed by a two-run RBI double by Pappas scoring both Sonognini and Drew McKown.

An RBI single to left by Sanderson tied up the contest at four and UT took their lone lead of the day after Baylee Howley extended the inning taking advantage of a UNLV fielding error to drive in Gabi Giroux.

UNLV responded with a four-run fourth inning with a pair of solo home runs and a two-run RBI single up the middle to take back an 8-5 lead.

The Rebels tacked on two more runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth to wrap up the contest in run-rule fashion.

The Trailblazers continue action at the UNLV Red & Black Classic on Saturday taking on LMU at 10:30 a.m. and North Dakota State (12-8) at 1 p.m.
