TRAILBLAZERS CLOSE OUT MARCH HOSTING SOUTHERN UTAH 
The Trailblazers close out the month of March this weekend for their first home WAC series hosting Southern Utah for a doubleheader on Friday and a single game on Saturday.

Saturday will be Stand Up to Cancer Day as the Trailblazers will honor those who have lost loved ones and those who have been impacted by cancer.

UTAH TECH IN OPENING HOME WAC SERIES
The Trailblazers are 3-2 in opening home WAC series with series wins in 2022 (2-1 vs. Utah Valley), 2023 (2-1 vs. New Mexico State) and 2024 (2-1 vs. Abilene Christian).

The Trailblazers dropped both series in 2021 & 2025 going 1-2 vs. California Baptist & 0-3 vs. Seattle U, respectively.

The Trailblazers are 1-4 in their first WAC home game with a 9-6 win over Abilene Christian on March 15, 2024.

ABOUT SOUTHERN UTAH THUNDERBIRDS
Southern Utah is 15-18 overall on the season opening WAC play last week at home against California Baptist winning one of three contests against the Lancers.

The Thunderbirds are 2-9 on the road with wins at San Diego (8-6) on Feb. 13 and at Loyola Marymount (3-1) on March 13.

This will be SUU's second trip to St. George this season after going 0-3 at Karl Brooks Field falling to Utah twice and Utah State once.

SUU was picked fifth in the WAC preseason poll while a pair of Thunderbirds earned Preseason All-WAC honors. 

Junior infielder Arianna Ramirez and sophomore outfielder Michaella Salvatierra were tabbed to the team while Ramirez was one of two players named the WAC Preseason Co-Player of the Year.

As a team, the Thunderbirds are hitting .262 from the plate and averaging 4.06 runs per game, marks both ranking sixth in the WAC. SUU is third in the WAC in ERA (5.02) while opponents are averaging .307 average & 5.1 runs per game

Junior outfielder Taralyn Ollison leads the team hitting .336 from the dish and is sixth in the WAC with 38 hits. Ramirez is hitting .321 with 34 hits with 16 RBIs and freshman McKenzy Becerra is hitting .284 and has driven in a team-high 20 RBIs.

Sophomore pitcher Hannah Duncan leads the team in innings pitched (71.0), strikeouts (50), & appearances (19) and freshman Avery Nielson leads the team in wins (5) & is holding opponents to a .268 average.

SERIES HISTORY VS. OPPONENTS (years they played)

  • vs. Southern Utah - 26-15 (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025)
  • The Trailblazers are 17-4 at home against the Thunderbirds, 8-10 on the road and 1-1 at neutral sites.
  • UT is 5-2 against SUU at home in the Division I era.

PAPPAS EARNS SECOND WAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONOR
Kinley Pappas hit .818 from the plate last week going 9-for-11 from the dish with six extra-base knocks smacking three doubles, two triples and a home run, scored five runs, drove in seven RBIs and swiped a pair of bases.

In addition, the Eugene, Ore., native also drew a walk and was hit by a pitch to reach base in 11 of 13 at-bats.

Pappas recorded multiple hits in all four games with two hits in three games and a three-hit performance in a 8-6 win in game one of a doubleheader at Utah Valley on Saturday.

WHERE THE TRAILBLAZERS RANK IN THE WAC
The Trailblazers rank third in the WAC in batting average (.289) and are fifth in scoring (4.68) & runs (145).

On the season, Pappas leads the WAC in batting average (.469), doubles (13), triples (5), hits (45), slugging percentage (.896) and total bases (86).

TRAILBLAZERS IN THE NCAA ERA
Utah Tech is 655-346 (.654) overall in its 19 seasons in the NCAA era.

In his 16 seasons leading the Trailblazers in the NCAA era, Simkins is 552-298 (.649).

HOME RECORD AT KARL BROOKS FIELD
The Trailblazers are 328-118 at home in the NCAA era.

The Blazers are 285-104 at home under Simkins.

UP NEXT
The Trailblazers head back on the road next week traveling to California Baptist (24-11, 2-1 WAC) on April 3-4.
