Utah Tech opened its penultimate homestand of the 2025 season on a sour note as the Trailblazers were dealt a 17-3 loss by UNLV in eighth innings on Tuesday night at Bruce Hurst Field.
Â
UNLV (24-20), which pounded out nine extra base hits on the night, bolted out to a 4-0 second inning lead thanks to a pair of two-run home runs from Nicky Garritano and Dean Toigo.
Â
The Trailblazers (17-25) managed to get two of those runs back on the home third when
Ryan Kroepel launched a two-run homer of his own off the scoreboard in left center that cut the deficit in half at 4-2.
Â
It remained a two-run game until the top of the sixth when a lead-off Utah Tech error and a walk opened the floodgates for the UNLV offense as the Rebels outscored the Blazers 13-1 over the final three innings to secure the road win.Â
Utah Tech wound up with nine hits in the loss, with lead-off hitter
Kyle McDaniel accounting for three of those safeties and a run scored. McDaniel, who has hit safely in 12 of his last 13 games, extended his Division I-era school record on-base streak to 28-straight games.Â
Utah Tech continues its homestand with a crucial three-game WAC weekend series against Seattle U.Â
       Â
Game one of the series will be played on Friday beginning at 12:05 p.m. (MT), followed by game two on Saturday afternoon at 2:05 p.m. (MT), and the series finale on Sunday at 12:05 p.m. (MT).
