Trailblazers Sweep Colorado Mesa 7-0

(St. George - March 7, 2025) - Utah Tech women's tennis swept Colorado Mesa 7-0 on Friday at Trailblazer Tennis Courts. The Trailblazers earned their first win of the season, dropping just two sets the entire day.

"It was a great win. The girls really played well," head coach Eric Pelton said. "They came out strong in the doubles and kind of dominated and had a lot of energy, which set the tone for the rest of the match and then into the singles, and just all the way down they played really well. They fought through some difficult situations and overcame and it was just really neat to see them out there working hard and playing well. Just a lot of the things we've been practicing and working on, they were able to really execute and perform today, so it was exciting."

The Trailblazers opened the contest by winning all three doubles matches. In the first match, sophomore Mariana Zurita and freshman Maya Inouye dispatched sophomore Devyn Rodriguez and junior Jade Brilhante 6-1.

Senior Laura Coulome and freshman Nutsa Tsintsadze also won 6-1 over senior Makenna Livingston and junior Delia Maier in the second doubles match.

The third doubles match was a little closer, but the Trailblazer pair of sophomore Ana Gutierrez Sampere and junior Nicole Kells pulled off a 6-4 win over freshman Catalina Ballon Marin and junior Jane Steur.

Inouye started off singles play strong for UT, winning all 12 games to beat Ballon Marin 6-0, 6-0 at the number five spot.

Gutierrez Sampere picked up her second singles win of the season with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at the number two spot over Rodriguez.

At the number three spot, Tsintsadze took down Maier 6-4, 6-2.

The number one singles match went to a tiebreaker in the second set, where Zurita fought off Livingston 7-3 to take the match 6-0, 7-6.

Coulome shook off a tough second set to defeat Brilhante at the number four singles spot 6-1, 2-6, 6-2.

Junior Raquel Roshak earned the Trailblazers' seventh point with a come-from-behind win at the number six singles spot. After dropping the first set 3-6, Roshak battled back to take the second set 6-2 and win the match with a 6-4 third set.

Pelton was proud of Roshak's and Coulome's abilities to bounce back and win their matches.

"It was great to see them do that today," Pelton said. "The big thing we we talk about a lot is that it's a matter of being willing to do whatever it takes and realizing that that yeah, they're playing good players that are going to win points, they're going to win games and it's just about staying strong and that's what they did. Then in the bigger points and in the pressure points and in the deuce points, they were able to overcome and to win those big points."

Utah Tech will now hit the road for a doubleheader in Boise, Idaho, on Sunday. The Trailblazers will face Boise State at 11 a.m., followed by the College of Idaho at 6 p.m.
