Trailblazers Top Gaels, 4-3 on Walk-Off by Naone

It was Utah Tech's first walk-off victory since a 10-9 win over BYU on March 7, 2023.

(St. George, Utah - March 7, 2025) - A pinch-hit walk-off single by the Trailblazers Kace Naone powered Utah Tech past Saint Mary's, 4-3 on Friday night at Bruce Hurst Field.

Two years to the day since the last walk-off victory for the Trailblazers, a 10-9 win over BYU on March 7, 2023, Utah Tech (6-9) finished the contest with 11 hits as a team.

Led by a 3-for-4 performance by Hunter Katschke, the designated hitter tallied two singles, a double, RBI and scored a run.

Leadoff hitter Levi Randall went 2-for-4 smacking a double, scored two runs and drew a walk while third baseman Ryan Kroepel added a pair of singles.

Starting pitcher Cade Montgomery threw a career-high eight innings allowing four hits, two runs, drew a walk and struck out five while hurling 96 pitches.

Kroepel came on in the ninth inning and despite giving up the game-tying run earned his first win as a Trailblazer.

How It Happened
The Trailblazers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after the first inning on a pair of RBI singles by Katschke and Aaron Perez.

Saint Mary's (9-6) answered back with an RBI triple in the second and tied the contest at two apiece in the third with an RBI ground out.

After a scoreless fourth inning, Utah Tech regained the lead in the fifth with a double to center by Randall and a pair of errors by the Gaels allowed Randall to hurry home for a 3-2 lead.

The next three innings saw Montgomery hold Saint Mary's to two base runners as they headed to the ninth only three outs away from the win.

Unfortunately, Saint Mary's had other plans rallying back with a two-out RBI single by Diego Castellanos driving in pinch-runner Joe McGee to knot the game at three.

Pinch-hitter Ethan Royal got the offense started for the Trailblazers in the bottom of the frame jumping aboard the bases with a single to right field.

With Royal moving to second on a single by Petey Soto Jr., the pair each moved up a base after a fielder's choice by Randall.

Putting a pair of Trailblazers in scoring position for Naone, the junior infielder came through with the game-winning RBI single through the right side to bring around Royal for the victory.

Up Next
The Trailblazers are back in action on Saturday for a doubleheader taking on UNLV (9-5) on noon and Saint Mary's at 4 p.m.
