Trailblazers Drop Eight-Inning Battle to Omaha, 7-6

The Trailblazers have fallen in fifth extra-inning contests this season.

(Long Beach, Calif. - March 2, 2025) - The Trailblazers closed out the Louisville Slugger Invitational on Sunday morning with a hard-fought 7-6 loss in eight innings to Omaha at the LBSU Softball Complex.

Utah Tech (9-12), who fell for only the second time in its last six games, tallied eight hits in the contest led by a 3-for-4 performance from leadoff hitter Cassidy Hornung, who also scored two runs.

Two other Trailblazers notched two hits apiece in Rylie Haith & Baylee Howley and Marisa Rubio picked up her team-leading sixth double of the season.

In the circle, Lexie Wilson made her second start of the campaign tossing 4.1 innings before Cemryn Pickett finished out the final three innings while taking her second loss.

How It Happened
Playing as the road team, the Trailblazers got the scoring started in the first with a run by Hornung after a Omaha fielding error at second base.

Omaha (14-4) responded with a run of their own on a leadoff home run to knot the score at one.

A pair of runs in the second gave Omaha a 3-1 lead, but the Trailblazers answered back with a three-run third to jump ahead, 4-3.

An RBI single to left by Haith drove home Hornung and Rubio followed with a two-run RBI double that brought around Haith and Kinley Pappas.

The fourth inning saw Howley score on a wild pitch to take a 5-3 lead with Omaha getting a run back in the fifth scoring on a wild pitch.

An RBI groundout by Pappas in the sixth pushed UT's lead back to two runs at 6-4, but again Omaha countered with a two-run home run in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at six.

A scoreless seventh pushed the Trailblazers to extra innings for the fifth time this season and in the extra frame, Howley was only able to advance to third in UT's turn at-bat before the Mavericks countered hitting a one-out walk-off RBI single for the win.
