Utah Tech saw its 2024-25 season come to an end in a 71-47 loss to top-seed Grand Canyon in the quarterfinal round of the 2025 Hercules Tires Western Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament on Wednesday afternoon inside the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
Â
The Trailblazers closed out their fifth NCAA Division I campaign with a 6-25 overall record.Â
How it happenedÂ
Wednesday's quarterfinal match-up was almost a carbon copy of when the two teams met last week in St. George (3/6).Â
Â
The No. 8-seeded Trailblazers gave the Lopes all they wanted and more in the first quarter, especially on the defensive end as Utah Tech forced six GCU turnovers.Â
Â
However Utah Tech could not turn those miscues into points. The Trailblazers could not get a shot to drop on the other end, finishing the opening quarter just 3-of-14 from the floor as they headed to the second period trailing GCU by a slim 10-7 count.
Â
And like in last week's home loss to the Lopes, Utah Tech was done in by strong GCU second quarter. Grand Canyon opened the frame with nine-unanswered points before an
Emily Isaacson 3-pointer stopped the run and trimmed the Blazer deficit to 19-10 with 7:16 to play until halftime.
Â
Unfortunately for Utah Tech, the Isaacson trifecta did not slow the Lopes down as they wound up outscoring the Trailblazers 24-6 en route to a commanding 34-13 halftime advantage.
Â
Utah Tech managed to pare the GCU lead below 20 points several times early in the third quarter. But the Trailblazers had no answer for the WAC's player of the year honoree, Lope guard Trinity San Antonio, who score nine of her game-high 25 points in that third quarter.Â
Â
The Lopes (30-2) led by 25 points heading into the fourth and never looked back from there as they punched their ticket into Friday's semifinal round.
Â
Numbers to know
Ellie Taylor wrapped up her stellar freshman season with a team-high 11 points. Taylor, who was named to the WAC's postseason all-freshman team, scored in double figures in 16 of her 30 games, and led or co-led the team in scoring six times.Â
Â
Isaacson put a bow on her stellar collegiate career with nine points, all from the perimeter, which extended her streak of games with a 3-pointer to 25-straight. The redshirt season, who is Utah Tech's career leader in made 3-pointers (259) and 3FG percentage (.3997), finished as the program's third all-time leading scorer (1,199) and fourth all-time leading rebounder (599).
Â
Isaacson, who is one of only three players in program history with at least 1,195 points and 595 rebounds, also wound up third all-time in steals (133) and field goals made (409), and fourth in career blocks (66).
Â
Meanwhile, junior point guard
Chardonnay Hartley (198) just missed breaking Utah Tech's single season assist record by only three dimes after she tallied 11 assists to go with eight points. For Hartley, it was her sixth double-digit assist game of the season, and she closed the season as Utah Tech's career assists/game leader (6.38 apg).Â
Â
Brie Crittendon also poured in eight points on 3-of-4 shooting and pulled down five rebounds.Â
Â
Utah Tech shot 31.8 percent from the floor (14-of-44) on the afternoon, and went 10-of-31 (.323) from the perimeter. The Blazers' 10 3-pointers marked the 12
th time that the team had reach double digits in 3-pointers made in a game this season.
Â
The Trailblazers also went 9-of-12 (.750) at the foul line and was credited with an assist on all 14 of their made field goals overall.Â
Â
San Antonio knocked down 10 of her 20 shot attempts as she led three GCU players in double figures. GCU went 27-of-58 (.466) from the floor and outrebounded Utah Tech 39-24.
