Trailblazers Blitzed at Southern Utah on Thursday Night

Utah Tech was felled by a hot-shooting Thunderbird side as the Trailblazers remained winless on the road in WAC play after a 78-51 loss at Southern Utah on Thursday night inside the America First Event Center.

How it happened
The Trailblazers (5-20/1-11 WAC) found themselves in a 25-8 hole after the opening 10 minutes after SUU hit on 11 of its first 19 field goal attempts.

The quarter break did not cool the Thunderbirds (8-19/6-8 WAC) down as they knocked down their first six shots to open the second quarter, all from 3-point country, to push their lead to 28 points three minutes into the frame and would enjoy a 54-22 cushion at the halftime break.

Meanwhile Utah Tech could not get anything to fall offensively in the first half. The Blazers connected on just 4-of-18 from the floor in the opening 20 minutes with only one 3-pointer, though team did 13-of-18 at the foul line.

The Trailblazers did manage to find success scoring the basketball in the second half, but in the end the deficit proved to be too much to overcome.

Numbers to know
Chardonnay Hartley led Utah Tech with 13 points, while Ellie Taylor and Paige Cofer each finished with nine points apiece.

Utah Tech wound up going 15-of-51 (.294) from the floor, 5-of-25 (.200) from the perimeter. The Trailblazers also went 16-of-22 (.727) at the foul line and outrebounded Southern Utah by a 34-33 count.

SUU guard Sierra Chambers led five T-Birds in double figures with 16 points on 5-of-6 from beyond the arc, including three 3-pointers in that decisive second quarter.

SUU shot 49.1 percent (28-of-57) for the game, which included a 12-of-19 (.632) clip from beyond the arc.

Up Next
Including Thursday's game at SUU, Utah Tech will play three of its final four regular season games on the road.

That stretch continues this Saturday when the Blazers head down to Riverside to play at California Baptist. Tip-off inside the CBU Fowler Events Center is set for 2 p.m. (MT).
