(Honolulu, Hawaii - Feb. 15, 2025) - The Trailblazers split day three of action at the Hawaii Spring Fling Tournament on Saturday falling to CSU Bakersfield, 10-6 before winning the second contest of the day over Sacramento State, 6-2.
Utah Tech (4-6) totaled 12 hits in each contest with
LB Kahahawai-Kekona and
Baylee Howley notching three hits apiece against CSU Bakersfield (6-5) and got two hits apiece against Sacramento State (6-3) from Kahahawai-Kekona,
Marisa Rubio,
Kennedy Embrey and
Maka Sonognini.
The Trailblazers saw base hits from six players against the Roadrunners and eight players against the Hornets with Sonognini leading the way in runs on the day with three and Howley in RBI with five.
In the circle,
Lexie Wilson got the start against CSU Bakersfield working four innings allowing eight hits and six runs with
Sauren Garton tossing the final three innings allowing four hits, four runs (three earned) and struck out three.
Against the Hornets,
Riley Price earned her second win of the season tossing five innings limiting Sacramento State to eight hits and two runs, one walk and struck out three. Garton threw the final two innings limiting the Hornets to two hits with one strikeout.
CSU Bakersfield Recap
Playing as the home team against CSUB, the Roadrunners raced out to a quick 5-0 lead after the top of the first inning.
An RBI single to left center by Howley got the Trailblazers on the board in the bottom of the frame.
A sacrifice fly for the Roadrunners extended their lead to 6-1 in the second, but UT answered back with three runs in the third notching an RBI single by Kahahawai-Kekona, and RBI ground outs by
Carly Eldredge and Howley to make it 6-4.
An RBI single by Kahahawai-Kekona in the fourth drove home Sonognini to cut the Roadrunners' lead down to one, but that would be as close as they could get as CSUB scored two runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings to take a 10-5 lead.
A one-out RBI double by Howley in the seventh made it a four-run game, but a line out and fly out thwarted the comeback attempt.
Sacramento State Recap
Playing as the visiting team against Sacramento State, a scoreless first three innings saw only two hits apiece for each side.
The Trailblazers got the scoring ignited in the fourth with a four-run frame with
Gabi Giroux drawing a bases-loaded walk followed by an RBI single to right by Kahahawai-Kekona and a two-run RBI single back up the middle by Howley.
The Hornets got on the board themselves in the bottom of the frame with a leadoff home run and added a sacrifice fly in the sixth to cut the UT lead to 4-2.
Two insurance runs came home to score for the Trailblazers in the seventh as an RBI triple by
Jorja Crider brought home Sonognini and an RBI single by Kahahawai-Kekona plated Eldredge for a four-run lead.
Garton worked around a pair of base hits in the bottom of the seventh to get a pair of fly outs to seal the victory.
