(Honolulu, Hawaii) - The Trailblazers continued action at the OUTRIGGER Rainbow Classic on Friday night with a thrilling 81-75 win in double overtime over Mississippi Valley State at Bankoh Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
Utah Tech (3-3) was paced for a second straight game by four Trailblazers in double figures led by a second straight double-double from senior forward
Ethan Potter.
The Utah Valley transfer scored a season-best 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field & going 6-of-7 from the free-throw line along with grabbing a season-high 13 rebounds.
Sophomore guard
Madiba Owona finished in double figures for the second time this season scoring 16 points and added six rebounds & three assists.
Chance Trujillo chipped in 12 points and
Tanner Davis had a well-rounded contest registering 11 points, eight rebounds and dished out a team-leading seven assists.
As a team, the Trailblazers shot 42.9 percent (27-63) from the field, 24.2 percent (8-33) from three-point range and 67.9 percent (19-28) from the charity stripe.
Mississippi Valley State (1-3) also had four players in double figures led by junior guard Michael James with 20 points.
Senior forward Daniel Mayfield added 19 points and nine rebounds.
How It Happened
After two early layups for the Delta Devils, the Trailblazers responded with a 9-0 run to jump ahead, 9-4 after a layup by Potter.
A layup by
Samuel "Tobi" Ariyibi with 10:50 to play in the first half extended Utah Tech's lead to 18-8, their largest lead of the first half, but a 22-14 run over the next nine-plus minutes brought MVSU to within a pair at 32-30.
A three-pointer by Owona pushed the Trailblazers ahead by five, 35-30 with a late layup by the Delta Devils giving UT a 36-32 lead at halftime.
The second half, which saw seven ties, saw the Trailblazers lead 54-52 midway through the half after a three-point play by Davis.
A layup by Potter tied the game at 60 with 5:16 to play and the Trailblazers held the lead until the final three seconds when Lamont Sams nailed a three-pointer to send the game to overtime.
A three-point play by Owona got the first overtime started, but an 8-2 run for the Delta Devils pushed MVSU up 73-70 with 16 seconds remaining.
The Trailblazers refused to go down without a fight as a triple by Trujillo with seven seconds left knotted the game at 73 to send the contest to a second overtime.
After trading baskets to start the next five minutes, Potter secured the final six points of the second session nailing four free throws and a layup to secure the victory.
