Trailblazers Outlast In-State Foe Westminster College Friday Night, 1-0

Utah Tech posted its second-straight shutout decision with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over former in-state RMAC foe Westminster College on Friday night at Greater Zion Stadium.

After both teams slugged their way through a scoreless first half, the Trailblazers (2-0-2/0-0-0 WAC) finally cracked the scoreboard 11-plus minutes in the second frame with the match's lone goal, which came on a header from Kalea Woodyatt.

Lacy Fox sent the ball into the near corner to Emily Garbett, who lofted a pass deep inside the Griffins' 18-yard box.

Woodyatt managed to high-point the ball in the middle of the scrum and redirected it into the back of the net. The goal was the senior midfielder's first of the season, and the first since the season finale of her freshman year in 2021 (at New Mexico State – 10/30/21).

Utah Tech's defense managed to limit Westminster (0-1-0) to only 11 shots on the night, five of which were on target.

However junior netminder Brianna Frey stopped all five shots on goal en route to her second-straight clean sheet in goal.

Utah Tech finished with 14 shots, nine on goal, with Garbett leading the way with four attempts (3 SOG).

"I'm proud of the August we had, to go undefeated is a big deal, but I walk away from [tonight's win] pretty disappointed in our effort level," said Utah Tech Head Coach Lexi Brown. "Our effort level wasn't where we needed it to be tonight. It's always hard to play a non-Division I opponent, and we didn't play our best.

"We got a big goal from Kalea [Woodyatt], it was her first goal since her freshman year, and I'm really proud of her for that," Brown added.

Utah Tech closed its three-match homestand with a 2-0-1 mark, and the Trailblazers will look to keep the momentum going as they will now play their next six matches on the road throughout the month of September.

"There's a lot of things we need to sort through going forward," Brown concluded. "We step into a tough September and we need to be more prepared heading into our next few games."

The Blazers begin that road stretch with a two-game trip Arizona, which starts with a match at Northern Arizona next Thursday night in Flagstaff.
