TRAILBLAZERS SWEEP UT ARLINGTON TO CLOSE OUT HOME SLATE
The Trailblazers continued their hot play over the weekend sweeping UT Arlington to close out their home schedule.
Winners of six of its last seven, Utah Tech exploded for a season-high 15 runs in game one of its doubleheader sweep of the Mavericks on Friday defeating UTA, 15-1 in five innings for their second run-rule win of the season and 8-4 in game two.
An eight-run second inning got the Trailblazers offense started, highlighted by a grand slam to left field by Campbell to make it, 8-0. Two more runs came home for the Trailblazers in the third inning after a pair of fielding errors by the Mavericks pushed UT ahead, 10-0.
Five more runs came home for the Blazers in the fourth to extend their lead to 15-0 with the Mavericks breaking up the shutout bid with a solo home run in the fourth.
The second game saw the Trailblazers break a 2-2 tie with a six-run sixth inning, including a two-run RBI single by Marisa Rubio to center brought home both Oaklee Trapp and Ellie Evans for an 8-2 lead after six innings.
The series finale saw the Trailblazers win a back-and-forth contest on Senior Day breaking an 8-8 tie with a two-out triple by LB Kahahawai-Kekona down the right field line putting the go-ahead run only 60 feet away as a wild pitch allowed Kahahawai-Kekona to come home for the eventual game-winning run and a 9-8 lead.
ABOUT THE UTAH VALLEY WOLVERINES
The Wolverines are 20-26 overall on the season with a 12-10 mark in the WAC sitting in a tie for third in the WAC with the Trailblazers.
Utah Valley, who is 8-10 at home this season, is coming off a series win at Southern Utah last weekend. The Wolverines also have series wins over Tarleton State, Abilene Christan and Seattle U.
UVU is hitting .287 as a team this season to rank fourth in the WAC while averaging 4.7 runs per game to check in second in the conference. The Wolverines are 16-4 on the season when scoring five or more runs and scored a season-high 14 runs at Seattle U on April 2.
Redshirt junior infielder Megan Gibbs leads the team with a .354 average from the plate while leading the WAC in home runs with 13 and slugging percentage at .709. She also ranks third in the league with 44 RBI and tops the team with 45 hits.
In the circle, UVU has a 5.23 ERA while opponents are hitting .318 from the plate and averaging nearly six runs per game. The Wolverines have a 1.21 strikeout-to-walk ratio with 182 strikeouts and 151 walks.
Pitcher Halle Morris, a graduate transfer from Utah, leads the team in wins (8), ERA (4.41), innings pitched (116.0), strikeouts (67) and appearances (25). Also a top hitter, Morris is hitting .342 from the plate while recording 41 hits, 11 doubles and 27 RBI. She also leads the club and ranks fifth in the WAC with a .474 on-base percentage.
CAMPBELL NAMED WAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Senior pitcher Rachel Campbell was named the WAC Player of the Week on Monday after putting together a a big week from the plate in the Trailblazers sweep over UT Arlington.
The Castle Rock, Colo., native hit .625 in the series collecting five hits in eight at-bats smacking three home runs, including a pair of grand slams, along with a solo shot, and added 10 RBI in the series.
In Friday's first game of a doubleheader sweep, Campbell drilled a grand slam in Utah Tech's 15-1 run-rule win over the Mavericks and followed it up in game two with a 3-for-3 performance tallying another grand slam, a solo home run, and a single in an 8-4 win.
Campbell closed out the series on Saturday with an RBI single in the Trailblazers wild 9-8 win to complete the sweep of UTA on Senior Day.
SWIPING BAGS
The Trailblazers rank third in the WAC in stolen bases with 40 led by LB Kahahawai-Kekona with a team-leading 11 stolen bags which ranks fifth in the conference.
JOHNSTON LEADING WAY IN THE CIRCLE
Leading the way in the circle for the Trailblazers is junior Attlyn Johnston, who sits second in the WAC in both strikeouts (98) and innings pitched (116.0).
She is tied for sixth in the conference in wins with eight and is among the conference leaders with 20 starts.
SERIES HISTORY VS. UTAH VALLEY
The Trailblazers lead the all-time series over Utah Valley, 7-5 after sweeping the Wolverines at home to close out the regular season in 2023 outscoring UVU, 26-6 in the series.
The Blazers and Utah Valley split their six games in 2022 with Utah Tech winning the series at home taking two out of three games while the Wolverines won two of three contests in Orem.
UVU won the two teams first meeting in 2021 with the Trailblazers winning the middle game of the series, 15-4, but dropped the other two games in the series.
UTAH TECH VS. WAC OPPONENTS
Utah Tech has faced California Baptist (50) most often, followed by Grand Canyon (42), Southern Utah (37), Seattle U (16) and Utah Valley (12) closing out the top five most played.Â
The four Texas schools round out their WAC opponents as the Trailblazers have squared off against UT Arlington seven times, followed by Abilene Christian six times and Tarleton State and Stephen F. Austin five times.
WAC STANDINGS
The Trailblazers enter the final weekend of the regular season sitting in a tie for third in the WAC with Utah Valley at 12-10.
Grand Canyon, who won the WAC Tournament in 2023, claimed the regular season title with a 20-3 mark. California Baptist will finish second with a 15-6 mark while Seattle U is in fifth, sitting just a half-game behind Utah Tech and Utah Valley.
UTA sits in sixth with a 10-12 mark while there is a three-way tie for seventh between Southern Utah, Abilene Christian and Stephen F. Austin at 8-15. Tarleton rounds out the standings in 10th place with a 7-15 mark.
UTAH TECH IN WAC PLAY
The Trailblazers are in their fourth season of WAC play with a 45-43 overall mark. The Blazers are 26-21 at home and 19-22 on the road.
Utah Tech captured the WAC regular season crown in 2023 with a 19-5 overall record, including an 11-1 mark at home.
UT went 8-16 in WAC play in 2022 and finished fifth in the West Division posting a 4-8 mark on the road as well as at home. The Trailblazers claimed series wins over Utah Valley, New Mexico State and Grand Canyon.
In their first season of WAC play in 2021, the Blazers went 6-12 to finish sixth in the WAC. UT went 3-6 on the road and at home with series wins over Tarleton and Grand Canyon.
WAC TOURNAMENT
The Trailblazers will play in their second WAC Tournament next week traveling to Seattle U.
Set for May 8-11 in Seattle, the top eight teams in the regular season standings qualify for postseason play.
