Utah Tech could not protect an early-inning lead as the Trailblazers dropped the final game of its three-game WAC series at Utah Valley, 15-5 in eight innings, on Sunday afternoon at UCCU Ballpark.
The Trailblazers (8-22/6-9 WAC) raced out to a quick 2-0 first inning advantage thanks to a one-out
Hank Dodson RBI-double and an
Aaron Perez run-scoring groundout.
UVU would counter with a run of its own without benefit of a hit in its first offensive frame, but Utah Tech managed to get that run back an inning later with a
Kyle McDaniel two-out single that scored
Jack Walker, who doubled with one out in the inning.
However that two-run cushion disappeared in the home half of the stanza as the Wolverines (16-17/8-4 WAC) struck for five runs to erase the deficit and take a 6-3 advantage. UVU rapped out four hits in the rally, and took advantage of a passed ball and a crucial Blazer throwing error on a possible inning-ending double play.
Trailing 9-3 in the sixth, Utah Tech cashed in an
Aaron Perez lead-off bunt single and two walks with a clutch two-out, two-run Walker single that trimmed the deficit to 9-5.
That would be as close as the Trailblazers would get as UVU clapped back with a pair of solo homers in the seventh, and clinched the series sweep with a walk-off grand slam in the eighth.
Walker finished with two hits and two RBI to lead the Utah Tech offense, which collected five hits on the day.
The Trailblazers will step out of conference play and head south on Interstate 15 to Las Vegas for a two-game midweek series at UNLV this Tuesday and Wednesday.
