Utah Tech dropped the middle game of its three-game WAC series at Utah Valley by a 6-0 count on a frigid Friday afternoon at UCCU Ballpark.
The Trailblazers (8-21/6-8 WAC) bats were stymied through the first seven innings by Wolverine starter Mitch Mueller (W, 3-0), who surrendered only four hits and five total base runners.
Meanwhile Utah Valley (15-17/7-4 WAC) struck for a single run in the second before erupting for four runs in the fourth en route to a commanding 5-0 lead through four innings complete. The Wolverines would tack on an insurance run in the seventh, while two UVU relievers held Utah Tech to just one hit over the final two innings to close out the game.
Senior catcher
Hank Dodson led the Trailblazers with two hits, including a fourth-inning double, while
Ethan Royal,
Hunter Katschke and
Kyle McDaniel each collected base hits. Three Utah Tech pitchers combined to limit UVU to only six total hits, though two of those hits were home runs, while UVU was able to draw six walks.
The Trailblazers were limited to just two hits on the night, a
Hunter Katschke single in the fourth inning, and an
Ethan Royal two-out single in the Utah Tech fifth.
The series finale between the two teams has been moved to Sunday due to inclement weather in Orem. First pitch is slated for 2:05 p.m.
