Utah Tech saw its WAC Tournament hopes, and its season, come to an end after an 84-71 road loss at Stephen F. Austin in the 2023-24 season finale on Saturday afternoon at the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
With Saturday's loss, the Trailblazers closed their fourth NCAA Division I campaign with an 11-20 overall record, which included a 7-13 WAC mark and a ninth-place finish in the conference standings.
Both teams got off to sluggish starts on offense to open the game. However it was the Lumberjacks (17-14/10-10) who managed to shake it off first as they outscored Utah Tech 19-8 over the final six-plus minutes of the opening half to turn a flat-footed 15-15 tie in to a 34-23 SFA lead at the intermission.
The Trailblazers would trim the Lumberjack advantage to eight at 36-28 after a
Unisa Turay 3-pointer, only to see SFA counter with an 18-4 run to blow the game open at 54-32 with just over 12 minutes to play.
Utah Tech tried to chip away at the double-digit deficit, but the Lumberjacks answered every potential Trailblazer rally with points in bunches and held on for the victory.
Jaylen Searles paced the Trailblazers with 19 points off the bench on 7-of-15 shooting, including a 3-of-5 clip from beyond the arc, while
Noa Gonsalves added 10 points with three rebounds and two steals.
Utah Tech shot 40.0 percent for the game (25-of-55), though the Blazers were just 6-of-19 (.316) from the perimeter.
SFA forward Nana Antwi-Boasiako led all scorers with a career-high 30 points on 8-of-11 from the floor and 10-of-12 at the line. Latrell Josell chipped in 20 points, with 15 of those points coming at the charity stripe (15-of-15).
In fact, both teams combined to shoot 72 free throws thanks to 59 total fouls called in the game, which included six players fouling out (four from Utah Tech). SFA went 35-of-42 (.833) at the line, while the Trailblazers made 21 of there 30 attempts (.700).
SFA connected on 21-of-48 (.438) from the floor and went 7-of-20 (.350) from beyond the arc.
