Trailblazers set to host WAC showdown against Grand Canyon

The Trailblazers close out the month of March hosting WAC-leading Grand Canyon this weekend at Karl Brooks Field.

BLAZERS FALL TO BYU IN FIVE INNINGS
The Trailblazers opened the week on Tuesday hosting BYU falling to the Cougars, 9-1 in five innings.

Utah Tech totaled five hits with a pair of singles from Marisa Rubio while getting doubles from both Carly Eldredge and Madisen Duryea.

TRAILBLAZERS WIN SERIES AT STEPHEN F. AUSTIN
The Trailblazers swept a doubleheader over Stephen F. Austin on Saturday with a pair of 1-0 wins behind complete game shutouts from pitchers Attlyn Johnston and Danyelle Leone. The series wrapped up on Sunday with a tough 3-1 loss.

JOHNSTON EARNS WAC PITCHER OF THE WEEK HONORS
Johnston earned WAC Pitcher of the Week honors on Monday after going 1-1 on the weekend with a 1.27 ERA tossing 11.0 innings while striking out 13 and walking two.

In a 1-0 win over the Ladyjacks in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, she threw a complete game shutout limiting SFA to six hits while striking out a season-high nine and walked none.

She added four innings of work in her start on Sunday striking out four only allowing five hits, three runs, two earned, and struck out four.

WE'LL TAKE THAT
The Blazers are among the WAC leaders in stolen bases sitting third with 33. Leading the way is speedster LB Kahahwai-Kekona with 10 to sit third in the WAC. Sadie Gardner has added eight stolen bags and Maka Sonognini has posted six.

TAKING A STROLL
The Trailblazers rank fourth in the WAC in walks drawing 80 free passes this season. Freshman Gabi Giroux is tied for second in the WAC with 16 walks drawing walks in 12 games.

PITCHING RANKINGS
The Trailblazers check in fifth in the WAC in both strikeouts (111) and ERA (4.42). Danyelle Leone leads the WAC in ERA (1.85) while Johnston ranks third in the conference with 56 strikeouts.

ABOUT THE GRAND CANYON LOPES
The Lopes are 27-8 overall on the season while leading the WAC with a 6-2 record. The Lopes are coming off a doubleheader sweep over California Baptist on Tuesday and have WAC series wins over Utah Valley and Seattle.

GCU leads the WAC and ranks 16th in the nation hitting .329 as a team. The Lopes also lead the WAC in scoring (6.26), slugging percentage (.493), on-base percentage (.405), home runs (29), runs (219), hits (303), home runs (29), total bases (455), walks (107) and stolen bases (52).

On the pitching side, GCU has been stellar with a 2.49 ERA to also lead the WAC while also topping the conference in opposing batting average (.228), strikeouts (186), earned runs allowed (83) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.82).

The Lopes have seven players hitting over .300 with Ashley Trierweiler leading the way with a .435 average (38th nationally) and leads the team in hits (50), runs (40), on-base percentage (.496) and stolen bases (16)

GCU has a pair of pitchers with seven wins apiece with Meghan Golden and Hailey Hudson. Hudson leads the WAC in strikeouts (61) while Hudson is second with 58 and also is second in ERA with 1.90. Opponents are being held to a .228 average and only average 3.1 runs per game.

SERIES HISTORY VS. GRAND CANYON
The Trailblazers lead the all-time series against Grand Canyon, 28-11. The Blazers are 3-6 in three series as WAC opponents winning one of three contests on the road last season and took two out of three at GCU in 2021.

UTAH TECH IN WAC PLAY
The Trailblazers are in their fourth season of WAC play with a 37-35 overall mark.

Utah Tech captured the WAC regular season crown in 2023 with a 19-5 overall record, including an 11-1 mark at home.

The Blazers won six of its eight WAC series with five sweeps, including the last three series of the spring taking down California Baptist, Southern Utah and Utah Valley.

UT went 8-16 in WAC play in 2022 and finished fifth in the West Division posting a 4-8 mark on the road as well as at home. The Trailblazers claimed series wins over Utah Valley, New Mexico State and Grand Canyon.

In their first season of WAC play in 2021, the Blazers went 6-12 to finish sixth in the WAC. UT went 3-6 on the road and at home with series wins over Tarleton and Grand Canyon.

The Trailblazers open the month of April on Tuesday traveling to BYU (18-12) for a contest at 5 p.m.
