(Northridge, Calif. – Feb. 16, 2024) - The Trailblazer softball team split their second day of action at the CSUN Matador Diamond Classic on Friday shutting out Pacific, 2-0 before falling in eight innings to CSUN, 8-7.
Utah Tech (2-5) totaled three hits in the opener with a pair of base knocks from
Carly Eldredge while the Trailblazers offense heated up in the second game totaling a season-high 10 hits from six different Blazers.
Pacific Recap
A low-scoring affair in the first game, the Trailblazers used a two-run RBI double to center by Eldredge in the second inning to bring home
Drew McKown and
Rachel Campbell for a 2-0 lead.
That was the lone scoring of the contest for either team as senior pitcher
Tyler Denhart made her third start of the season in the circle shutting out Pacific (1-6) and holding the Tigers to three hits while striking out one.
Pacific collected singles in both the fifth and sixth innings, but could not muster any threat as Denhart send the Tigers down in order in the seventh to seal the win.
CSUNÂ Recap
The second game of the day saw the Trailblazers score a season-high seven runs getting started with four runs in the first inning.
A two-run RBI double by
Baylee Howley and two more runs after a CSUN error put the Blazers up 4-0, but the Matadors quickly answered back with a three-run bottom of the inning to cut the UT lead down to one.
Two more runs by CSUN in the second and one more in the third put the home team ahead 6-4 after three.
The Trailblazers answered back with a three-run fourth inning to jump ahead by a run getting RBI singles by LB Kahahwai-Kekona and Eldredge followed by a bases-loaded walk to
Marisa Rubio.
The Matadors answered back with a solo home run to lead off the fifth tying the game at seven and after scoreless sixth and seventh innings, the Blazers headed to extra innings for the first time in 2024.
With a runner heading to second to start extra-inning play,
Brooklyn Dowdle moved to third after a bunt single.
Unfortunately, that was as close as she would come as a strikeout followed by a flyout and Dowdle leaving base early ended the frame as a two-out single in the bottom of the eighth by CSUN gave the Matadors the walk-off win.
