Trailblazers Stopped at CBU on Saturday Afternoon

Utah Tech saw its season long five-game win streak come to an end following a hard-fought 73-65 road loss at California Baptist on Saturday afternoon at the CBU Events Center.

Despite the loss, the Trailblazers did play to a 3-1 mark on their four-game road swing as they head into the final four weeks of the regular season with a 14-10 overall record, 8-5 in Western Athletic Conference play.

How it happened
CBU (19-2/11-1 WAC) pounced on the Blazers in the early going as the Lancers knocked down four of their first seven 3-point shots en route to a 15-5 advantage just four minutes into play.

Utah Tech answered that run with nine-unanswered points close the gap to 15-14. Breaunna Gillen stopped the CBU rally with a leaner in the lane, which was followed by a Maggie McCord conventional three-point play.

Catelyn Deaver, who got the starting nod on Saturday, followed that with a pair of free throws and an offensive putback to make it a one-point game.

The Lancers countered with a pair of late 3-pointers to end the first quarter, then saw their lead swell to nine after a Chloe Webb bucket began the second period.

However the Trailblazers clapped back, this time with a 9-1 spurt to again close to within a point at 24-23. Alyson Deaver and Maddie Warren both scored in the low block, which was followed by a Gillen bucket and McCord 3-pointer.

The two sides then traded scores over the final six minutes of the frame, which ended with CBU leading 35-32.

The Lancers wasted little time doubling up their lead, thanks to a Filipa Barros perimeter jumper just seven seconds into the second half.

Calyn Dallas quickly answered with a three-ball of her own 20 seconds later, which sparked an 11-4 Blazer run that the freshman guard bookended with her second 3-pointer that gave Utah Tech its first lead at 43-42 at the 5:14 mark of the third quarter.

The Blazers led 45-43 after a Warren transition bucket on Utah Tech's next possession, but CBU would go on to outscore Utah Tech 9-2 over the final four-plus minutes of the stanza to lead by five at 52-47 with 10 minutes to play.

McCord opened fourth quarter with her third 3-pointer of the day to the cut the Lancer lead to two. Unfortunately that would be as close as the Blazers would get as CBU rattled off a decisive 16-2 run to open up a 68-52 lead with four minutes left.

Undaunted, Utah Tech finished with a flourish, outscoring CBU 13-5 the rest of the way, but ran out time on the Trailblazers to complete a possible comeback.

Numbers to know
Gillen finished two assists shy of posting her third triple-double of the season as the fifth-year guard led the way with 17 points, 11 rebounds and eight dimes.

For Gillen it was her third double-double of the year and the 10th of her storied career. In addition, she surpassed 500-career assists on Saturday, with her school record total now standing at 505 in 113 career games played.

Meanwhile McCord also notched her third double-double of the year, and seventh of her career overall, with 14 points and 11 boards.

McCord's (181 3FGM) three made 3-pointers on Saturday moved her into solo second place on Utah Tech's career list, and the fifth-year senior also became the sixth player in program history to play in at 100 career games.

Dallas wound up with 15 points on a career-best five made 3-pointers, and the freshman filled the stat sheet with six rebounds, three assists and two steals.

The Trailblazers, who had shot better than 50 percent three times during their five-game win streak, struggled to find their shooting touch on Saturday. Utah Tech finished the game 25-of-72 (.347) from the floor, which included a 9-of-43 clip (.209) from the perimeter. The 43 3-point attempts were a season high and tied for the fourth-most in a game in the program's NCAA era (vs. Utah Valley; 12/31/22).

Utah Tech also went 6-of-9 (.667) from the foul line and outrebounded CBU by a 50-46 count. The Blazers also collected a WAC season-high 19 assists on their 25 made field goals and only turned the ball over 11 times.

Webb led all scorers with 22 points, while Barrington added 19. CBU shot 37.1 percent from the field and was 13-of-39 from beyond the arc.

Up next
Utah Tech will play the first of its two lone February home games next Thursday night when WAC-leading Grand Canyon visits the Burns Arena. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. (MT).
