(Phoenix, Ariz. - Nov. 7, 2024) - The Trailblazer volleyball team saw its five-match winning streak come to an end on Thursday night falling in four sets at Grand Canyon at Global Credit Union Arena.
Utah Tech (15-8, 9-4 WAC), who entered the match in a tie for second in the WAC along with Grand Canyon (17-8, 10-3 WAC), dropped the first two sets, 17-25, 16-25, won the third set, 25-21 before dropping a hard-fought fourth set, 25-23.
For only the third time this season, the Trailblazers were led in kills by someone other than
Kennedi Knudsen as sophomore outside hitter
Tessa Treanor had a team-leading 12 kills to go along with 10 digs to notch her seventh double-double of the season.
Hannah Howard and
Nana Asiata added 11 and 10 kills apiece, respectively, while sophomore setter
Marley Roe had a team-best 24 assists and
Casidy Fried had a team-leading five blocks.
The opening set saw GCU race out to a 12-4 lead. The Trailblazers answered back with a 9-6 run to close the deficit to five at 18-13 after a kill by Treanor. Three straight points for GCU pushed their lead to eight as they went on to win the set by that margin.
The second set saw the Lopes shoot out to an 8-1 lead and extend to as many as nine winning the set, 25-16 to take a 2-0 lead.
Action went back and fourth in the early going of the third set with GCU holding a slim 11-10 lead after a kill. The Trailblazers responded with a 9-0 run, capped off by a kill from Howard, to jump ahead 19-11.
A 9-4 run for the Lopes momentarily brought GCU within three, but a service error and kill by Howard sealed the set win to force a fourth set.
UT lead 11-9 in the early going of the fourth set, before the Trailblazers rallied back to notch ties at 22 and 23.
Looking to lock up the next two points to send the match to a deciding fifth set, fortunes were reversed for the Trailblazers as GCU scored the final two points of the match to win the match.
With the kills tied at 50 apiece, the Lopes led the Trailblazers in service aces (9-3), blocks (13-8) and digs (58-55) while leading in hitting percentage (.262-.194).
The Trailblazers close out the weekend on Saturday afternoon traveling to California Baptist (4-21, 4-9Â WAC) for a 2 p.m. contest at Van Dyne Gymnasium.
